Enterprises Lean towards Cloud - based Data Storage to Improve Performance

FREMONT, CA: 451 Research, an information technology research and advisory company, publishes a report that forecasts the trend of adopting cloud storage in the period from 2016 to 2017.  According to the survey, the use of cloud storage is expected to double; the survey also notes that spending on cloud-based data storage during the same period is going to increase from 8 percent to 17 percent of overall enterprise storage expenditures.

Cloud- based data storage not only provides organizations ample opportunities to streamline enterprise file operations and control storage costs but the disruptive technology has also  emerged as a powerful tools for  developers to enhance shared access and version control of files for employees working collaboratively in different geographic locations, reports Joel Shore for TechTarget.

Cloud storage is a model of data storage in which the digital data is stored in logical pools. The physical storage spans multiple servers and locations, and the physical environment is typically owned and managed by a hosting company. Cloud storage providers offer services to keep data available and accessible, and the physical environment protected and running.

Cloud storage services may be accessed through a co-located cloud computer service, a web service application programming interface (API) or by applications that utilize the API, such as cloud desktop storage, a cloud storage gateway or Web-based content management systems.

Industry experts believe that the challenge for developers is consolidation of assets to improve performance and simplify administration in the transition process of discrete islands of storage at each corporate location to a cloud-based data strong model based on the premise. According vendors and users, transitioning from on-premises to cloud-based data storage is a straightforward process that should require little to nothing in the way of rewriting application code.

Enterprises are turning to cloud-based data storage providers, such as Amazon S3 and Microsoft Azure Storage to tackle the performance issue and ensure that users do not attempt to make changes to the same files simultaneously. Businesses are also looking towards management controller appliances installed at each location. Appliances from companies like Panzura and Nasuni utilize solid state drive (SSD) caching technology to ensure fast file access.
