Harmonic's Offers Headend Solution to Bharti Airtel; Enhances HD Viewing Experience

SAN JOSE, CA: The dawn of Ultra-High Definition TV and Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming services has put pressure on unifying video and IT infrastructures. However, the video delivery infrastructure provider—Harmonic has been handling the tasks from video ingest to delivering to the home, with ease. The company helps in producing, delivering and monetizing amazing video experiences, with unmatched business agility and operational efficiency. In a recent development, the company has agreed to leverage  its state-of-the-art compression headend solution to Airtel Digital TV, the Direct-To-Home (DTH) arm of global telecommunications provider—Bharti Airtel. This deployment would help Bharti Airtel improve the HD viewing experience of its customers.

The utilization of the former company’s High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC), upgradeable video infrastructure solutions would enable Airtel Digital TV improve its video quality as well as expand its DTH HD portfolio to over 50 premium channels. The headend solution that Bharti Airtel is leveraging is based on Harmonic's Electra X2 advanced media processor enabling high-quality, low-bandwidth MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 encoding of SD and HD video content. These Electra X2 processors of Harmonics would be combined with its ProStream 9100 stream processor and ProView 7100 integrated receiver-decoder (IRD), which will be controlled by their NMX video network management solution. These solutions would help Airtel Digital TV address a huge range of content reception applications that would increase bandwidth efficiency apart from lowering the total cost of ownership.
