In 1995, Mann launched Heard Right Technology, Inc., his first venture to merge real estate development with emerging technologies. It eventually evolved into the HRT Group, a full-spectrum development firm encompassing mortgage financing, site development, real estate services and integrated tech solutions. At a time when conversations around smart infrastructure and sustainability were still nascent, Mann was already publishing white papers on carbon footprints, intelligent facilities and self-sustaining communities, ideas that were seen as far ahead of their time.

He explored multicasting video over broadband connections and developing advanced communication systems. This work evolved into a focus on home and facility automation, where he coined the concept of the “zero-mile zone,” the intelligence within the structure itself. While others concentrated on last-mile delivery, Mann focused on ensuring systems inside a building or community worked together for individuals, businesses and municipalities alike.

The long-standing concept has become fully executable. With technology finally catching up to his ideas, Mann and his team are building the communities he conceptualized.
