“We start with a top-down approach, where we look for areas where the data supports the client’s value proposition, as well as the hot spots, areas where a health system is underperforming,” says Matthew Weimer, Principal | Director, BSG Analytics. “We can then drill down into the episodes, all the way to the claim level, to identify the issues and the opportunities for improvement.”

BSG Analytics has played key support roles in public policy debates, legislation, anti-trust litigation, hospital expansions, small-format hospitals, quality improvements and cost reductions. Frye recalls the time a large healthcare system was desperately trying to manage its costs. BSG Analytics helped the client zero in on polypharmacy utilization, social welfare resources and behavioral health at the primary care level can help reduce costs and improve efficacy. BSG Analytics’ guidance helped the client reduce the costs of treating its chronically ill patients by $300 per member per year.

In addition to incorporating new datasets and machine learning algorithms, BSG Analytics is broadening its research into identifying and removing barriers to care. It also is currently partnering with two large integrated healthcare systems to improve synergies between their providers and the health plans they sponsor.
