Bringing Potential Dropouts Back from the Brink

Solving America’s dropout crisis requires more proactivity. The Gates Foundation revealed multiple reasons why students drop out of high school, such as a lack of connection to the school environment, a perception that school is boring, academic challenges, and the weight of real-world events.

As complex as these individual circumstances may be, for almost all young students, dropping out of high school is not a sudden act, but a gradual process of disengagement.

ChallengeU has taken a step toward stemming the tide of the nation’s dropouts, and reclaiming their squandered potential with its virtual dropout recovery programs. The company is making a difference by playing a small but vital role in fighting the silent epidemic of high school dropouts. Its programs are aimed at youth who can’t afford to get full-time education in a traditional classroom due to life and behavioral issues.

It partners with public and charter schools to identify, re-enroll, and graduate students who had previously dropped out of high school, giving them the opportunity to improve academic achievement skills, obtain high school diplomas, and bolster employability through work experience, just like every other student.

“For every student we recover, we ensure they get all the relevant credentials to comply with their state’s graduation requirements. Once they graduate, we help them seamlessly transition into a post-graduation opportunity. Whether the student decides to get in the Armed Forces, corporate workforce, or college for advanced degrees, we ensure that we provide them the guidance they need to successfully fulfill their personal and career goals,” says Nicolas Arsenault, CEO of ChallengeU.

Since 2019, Arsenault has launched the ChallengeU dropout recovery program in partnership with Imagine Learning, a student-centered learning platform, that binds the power of people, curricula, and technology to drive student growth with forward-thinking solutions.

ChallengeU’s school counselors work closely with each student to examine dropout eligibility and gain a better grasp of the winning conditions that will allow students to be effectively recovered.

After analyzing the eligibility conditions, students can enroll in the ChallengeU program.

As a part of the program, a coach is designated to each student who adapts to their individual needs, learning style, and life situation. This helps establish strong relationships with the students and thoughtfully observe their progress throughout developmental stages, both prior to and during their educational journey, so they can intervene or advocate for students when necessary.

ChallengeU has taken a step to stemming the tide of the nation’s dropouts, and reclaiming their squandered potential

For ChallengeU, it’s not just about building a school climate that fosters academics. It’s about identifying and addressing the root causes that drove students away from the school in the first place. It works hand in hand with community organizations to ensure that every student enrolled gets the full support they need. It’s 360 wraparound services improve schooling conditions by providing emotional support, graduation coaching, career counseling, talent discovery, and more to keep students focused and productive as they meet their graduation goals.

While the company has always focused on hiring from within communities, this year, the company is taking that commitment to the next level by hiring some graduates to take on the role of a coach and train other students. The company is offering them an internship program, followed by a job opportunity to become a coach. This allows students to look up to and interact with someone who’s been in their shoes, and truly understands both their personal and study requirements.

The dropout crisis is just the tip of the iceberg. ChallengeU goes beneath the surface to help high school dropouts see the light at the end of the tunnel by assisting them in dealing with the complexities of their lives, because, in their eyes, these students are not problems to be solved, but potential to be fulfilled.
