Patent drafting is highly sensitive, requiring precision, legal acumen, and technical clarity. Each claim, figure, and phrase must withstand legal, technical, and jurisdictional scrutiny, as one misplaced word or inadvertent disclosure can jeopardize years of R&D. The stakes mean that attorneys and IP teams spend hours shaping inventor disclosures into patent-ready material, a meticulous process of drafting, reviewing, and revising that is time-consuming and susceptible to human error. The complexity increases when considering the need for compliance with various jurisdictional requirements and the integration of detailed technical drawings.

AI is now changing that equation. By automating repetitive steps, improving consistency, and accelerating drafting, AI frees professionals to focus on strategy, originality, and quality. However, not all AI solutions are equipped to handle the intricacies of patent drafting. It must be tuned to legal and technical nuance, figure generation that meets rigid patent office specifications, citation handling with zero tolerance for error, and security strong enough to protect sensitive IP from exposure.

Designed to meet these exact demands, Edge is an AI-powered automation application that complements the patent expertise of enterprises, in-house legal teams, and law firms that manage high volumes of intellectual property (IP). It combines intelligent automation with proprietary features for figures, citations, and formatting to help professionals produce top-quality applications faster, more accurately, and with rock-solid confidentiality.

In addition, Edge delivers enterprise-grade security, fully SOC 2 Type II and GDPR compliant, protecting sensitive IP from inadvertent disclosure. This hybrid approach accelerates drafting, reduces errors, and provides measurable ROI that off-the-shelf AI solutions cannot match.

Such innovation is critical, given that traditional software tools often struggle with the complex formatting and technical demands of patent work, leaving in-house counsel juggling multiple priorities and administrative overhead.

A Smarter Workflow for Patent Drafting

Within a standard enterprise workflow, Edge assists patent professionals through every step of patent drafting, ensuring efficiency while maintaining accuracy, security, and cost-effectiveness.

The conversations have matured from skepticism to strategy. People want to know what our value proposition is, what kind of case studies we have, and how our technology actually works.

Inventor disclosures are uploaded into the system, where a dedicated tool interacts with the inventor, asking follow-up questions to improve the quality of the disclosure from the outset. The software then guides users through drafting claims, creating patent-specific figures, and composing detailed descriptions. Edge also formats applications for multiple jurisdictions, including the United States, the European Union, and international offices, helping to avoid costly submission errors. It can also handle specialized tasks, like ST.26 listings for biotech and figure drawings for aerospace.

Where Edge truly breaks the mold is in its focus on security and privacy, which are central to its design. It also provides access to specialized database processing tools so that patent drafters can fully understand existing IP before crafting new applications. Patents often use two-column formats that standard software cannot handle correctly, so Edge includes a proprietary citation tool built to manage these nuances.

The stakes are immense. A single mishandled confidential submission can jeopardize an entire patent’s validity. Lawyers often avoid generic tools such as Google or ChatGPT for fear of accidental disclosures that could expose sensitive ideas. Edge is purpose-built to prevent those risks, creating secure silos within an organization and ensuring that sensitive IP never slips into the wrong hands.

Another defining aspect of Edge’s AI is that it has access to the same set of tools as human professionals, but specialized for AI. This integration of AI and non-AI components makes the process faster, more cost-effective, and more accurate. For example, Edge can generate figures, including flowcharts and graphs, in a patent-specific format. Purely AI-based methods, such as diffusion or large image models, would be slower, more expensive, and prone to errors. Instead, Edge’s proprietary tools allow the AI to leverage prebuilt software to create outputs that guarantee precision, speed, and editability. Once a figure or chart is generated, it can be easily adjusted as needed.

Behind Edge’s technology is a team and system built to understand patents at a granular level. Edge’s LLM system is augmented with specialized patent knowledge and proprietary tools, which together ensure output that is precise, compliant, and customized for the intricacies of IP law.

Edge is also building tools for specific subject areas where patents cluster, such as life sciences, chemistry, and AI. For example, life sciences teams benefit from ST.26 support and chemistry-focused drafting aids, enabling professionals to work faster and with domain-specific accuracy. As Edge evolves, these specialized modules will expand across additional patent-heavy industries.

The Impact of Edge

Edge’s promise is not theoretical; it is already transforming how some of the world’s largest enterprises and law firms handle patents, from Fortune 500 in-house practices to American Law 100 global law firms.

Take Nestlé, for instance. The global company was one of Edge’s earliest Fortune 500 adopters. When they began working together, Nestlé’s patent process involved almost no automation, relying instead on legacy systems that could not keep up with the pace of innovation with every application being drafted by hand end-to-end. Today, the company uses Edge’s AI-driven software to accelerate virtually every part of the pre-grant process, from helping inventors produce higher-quality disclosures to drafting applications faster and more accurately.

“The real value comes from what it frees up,” explains Zimmerman. “In-house counsel at large enterprises are constantly overextended, wearing multiple hats without the specialization that a firm might offer. Edge helps them reclaim time and focus on higher-impact work rather than repetitive tasks.”

Another example comes from a National Law Journal 500 law firm that, after integrating Edge into its workflow, expanded its use across several practice groups and achieved over a 40 percent reduction in drafting time for patent specifications. Beyond efficiency gains, Edge has also reduced operational costs. Previously, the firm relied on external drafters to produce patent figures at roughly 50 dollars per figure, with multi-day turnaround times, ultimately costing clients hundreds of dollars per application. Now, the same task takes only minutes, fully integrated within Edge’s suite of tools.

As a result, Edge has dramatically improved his firm’s speed at drafting patent specifications, allowing them to meet tight deadlines. “Before, when I had a one-day turnaround request, I would have to turn it down, drop everything, or absorb the loss of some billable hours to make it happen. With Edge, now I have a chance to satisfy those clients.”

And that is the magic of Edge.

Shifting Perceptions Across the Industry

Edge’s growing footprint is not only reflected in its client base but also in how the broader IP community is now discussing AI. At last year’s 2024 IPO Annual Meeting in San Diego, the company’s presence underscored how quickly the conversation has evolved.

AI was the headline topic at this year’s event. Almost every session addressed how AI is reshaping the patent landscape, whether through the way practitioners file more patents related to AI inventions, how disclosure standards are changing, or how AI intersects with trade secrets and trademarks. Yet many people had questions about whether AI could work for them.

"The real value comes from what it frees up. In-house counsel at large enterprises are constantly overextended, wearing multiple hats without the specialization that a firm might offer. Edge helps them reclaim time and focus on higher-impact work, rather than repetitive tasks."

Zimmerman notes that the difference between 2025 and 2024 was striking. A year ago, many people were still asking whether AI could be secure or reliable enough for something as sensitive as patents. This year, no one is asking if; they are asking how.

“The conversations have matured from skepticism to strategy. People want to know what our value proposition is, what kind of case studies we have, and how our technology actually works,” says Zimmerman. “And when they hear about our work with enterprises and the value we’re bringing, they want to give us a try. No more of people asking, ‘Is AI really a thing?’”

For Edge, the shift was affirming. The company has spent the past year leading what Zimmerman calls an “education crusade,” helping enterprises understand that AI is neither a gimmick nor a silver bullet but a powerful tool. The reward: At this year’s 2025 IPO Annual Meeting in Washington, D.C., lawyers weren’t asking whether they could use AI but how.

The momentum coming out of IPO reflects a broader change. AI is no longer an emerging curiosity in the IP world; it is becoming an expected part of the modern patent workflow. Edge has been instrumental in defining what good looks like in that transformation.

The Next Frontier for Edge

While Edge has already made its mark on enterprise patent drafting, the company is far from finished. Over the next two years, it will expand its suite of products to address some of the most time-consuming and costly parts of the patent process.

The first major addition is prosecution, the most requested product by its clients. Patent prosecution covers the process of responding to the patent office after submission, a set of tasks that are notoriously repetitive, tedious, and time-intensive. With AI integrated into this workflow, Edge aims to deliver draft responses almost instantly, allowing professionals to review and refine rather than start from scratch.

Edge is also focused on reducing operational costs across the board. Many ancillary tasks in patent practice, such as formatting figures, managing administrative workflows, or handling billable back-office tasks, create significant overhead for both in-house teams and outside counsel. Edge’s upcoming tools will automate much of this work, cutting time and expense while delivering a level of speed and accuracy that was previously impossible.

The company’s approach to AI is deliberate. Large tasks are broken into smaller, repeatable components that reflect how practitioners think about their work. This prevents error propagation and ensures reliability. As LLMs become capable of handling longer, more complex tasks, Edge’s platform will scale in parallel, taking on larger workflows with the same level of precision.

Edge’s approach is firmly customer-driven. The company begins by analyzing the core issues clients face, including repetitive tasks that consume time, drive up costs, or hinder business objectives, and then develops software solutions specifically designed to address those problems. This philosophy ensures that every feature, from automated drafting to workflow optimization, delivers tangible value, aligning technology with the practical needs of patent teams and helping enterprises achieve greater efficiency and impact.

The vision is bold. Edge is positioning itself as more than an AI platform; it is an efficiency engine for enterprise patent teams. Faster drafting, better figures, automated office actions—all are designed to give clients an edge where it matters most: in speed, quality, and strategic decision-making.

For patent teams facing ever-increasing workloads and rising stakes, Edge is not just offering software. It is offering a glimpse of the future, where AI and smart workflows combine to turn complexity into clarity and hours of work into minutes of impact.
