Chronicling Healthcare Journeys through Technology

Epic Software

Judith Faulkner, CEO and Founder
Every patient's healthcare journey is unique and intricate. Epic Software stands as a stalwart confidant, precisely recording and organizing the chronicles of their care, capturing its nuances and building the narrative of their healthcare experience over time.

The cloud-based electronic health records system (EHR) is built for hospitals with the functionality to handle the day-to-day operations of large medical practices. It handles appointment management, clinical workflow, medical history, scheduling, lab integration, patient demographics and many more important aspects relevant to the healthcare experience.

The software enables healthcare institutions to maintain a singular, comprehensive medical record of each patient that integrates their health experiences. This unified record aims to simplify healthcare processes for patients, medical professionals and all stakeholders. It empowers them to be involved in and be informed of each enrolled patient's health journey, facilitating high quality, personalized care. Currently, it holds electronic medical records of more than 305 million patients.

The tech giant leads the way when it comes to innovation, recently creating an excitement in the healthcare industry. It had a sizable presence at the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society 2024 (HIMSS24) Global Conference & Exhibition, the largest gathering of healthcare technology professionals worldwide. Epic shared the newest additions in the software, highlighting its recent success with generative AI and discussing more than 60 other projects in the pipeline using artificial intelligence.

Boosting Clinical and Operational Efficiency

Epic's strategic priority lies in enhancing clinical and operational efficiency by harnessing the capabilities of generative AI. The company is engaged in developing projects that summarize information from patient charts, enabling clinicians to quickly catch up on their patients.

The integration of generative AI will also streamline the process of creating the first draft of responses to patient messages, enabling prompt answering to inquiries. Ambient listening is another feature aiming to document patient visits and enhance the face-to-face sessions.

Through its software, Epic is actively spearheading projects to deliver insights for data-driven staffing decisions within healthcare settings. The focus extends to optimizing the utilization of critical resources such as operating rooms (OR), infusion schedules and hospital beds.

Through an interface accessible from workstations or mobile devices, surgeons and schedulers can easily view available OR slots, release unutilized time slots or schedule procedures in open slots. It allows schedulers to have the capability to broadcast newly available OR times to other surgeons. This initiative is aimed at helping surgeons and schedulers to effectively manage resources, thereby reducing wait times for patients and enhancing overall operational efficiency.

Another significant advancement is the ongoing expansion of the health grid, facilitated by Epic software connecting diverse entities in the healthcare industry. This expansion includes the addition of new payers and specialty diagnostic labs, with the potential for further inclusion of medical-device manufacturers and pharmaceutical companies in the future. Through the platform, these entities can pool their expertise, resources and data, nurturing improved access to a wider array of healthcare services and enhancing coordination of care.

A Step Ahead in Advancing Medicine

Epic's innovative tool, ‘Best Care Choices for My Patient,’ empowers physicians in making informed treatment decisions for their patients by integrating evidence-based medicine directly into the point of care. The tool offers insights into the outcomes experienced by similar patients who have undergone treatment options the physicians are now considering. The approach is designed for minimal intervention byjust presenting them with data and allowing the exercise of their clinical judgment in selecting the most suitable course of action for each patient.

Cosmos, Epic's expansive EHR analytics platform, facilitates collaborations with organizations or individual physicians, granting access to its vast clinical data for research purposes. By consolidating billions of clinical data points, Cosmos creates a meticulously curated, high-quality, deduplicated and integrated dataset, aiming to accurately represent the U.S. population. This invaluable resource is available to all participating organizations, enabling groundbreaking research endeavors aimed at improving healthcare outcomes.

In a recent collaboration with a practicing maternal fetal medicine doctor, Cosmos proved instrumental in exploring strategies to mitigate new mother readmissions. With approximately 20 percent of postpartum patients in America experiencing high blood pressure, there's a heightened risk of rehospitalization. Identifying patterns related to such infrequent clinical conditions is often challenging without access to extensive clinical datasets, which Cosmos accomplishes with ease.

The company has integrated generative AI in Cosmos to make research more intuitive, turning conversational prompts into data queries. This functionality will soon be extended to local data, aiming to provide healthcare professionals with valuable insights.

Partnerships to Build Robust Healthcare Systems

To take healthcare management to the next level, Epic remains open to seeking further collaborations with organizations interested in advancing healthcare research and outcomes.

Epic’s recent collaborations with tech giants and advancements in data connectivity and value-based reimbursement models through the Epic Payer Platform mark a significant leap forward in healthcare operational efficiency. The new partnerships aim to revolutionize the flow of patient data between organizations.

Previously, the cumbersome task of extracting clinical records and submitting them manually to payers is now streamlined through automated submission processes. This technological innovation not just expedites approval processes but ensures accuracy and completeness in data transmission.

By leveraging unique potential of generative AI and other cutting-edge solutions, Epic Software helps enhance clinical and operational efficiency of healthcare organizations. Chronicling the healthcare journey of each individual seeking medical attention, it leads the way in improving workflows, optimizing resources and ultimately, creating better health outcomes for hundreds of thousands of patients.
