Fractal: Offering Data-driven Solutions for Effective Water Management

The LATAM marketplace is at its nascency, adopting and implementing digital transformation initiatives in water management. Despite the increasing number of large energy, mining, and agricultural organizations, most lag in technology optimization and rely on traditional resources and statistical models to support their operations. The growing awareness of addressing ESG issues through innovative solutions that meet sustainable development goals (SDG) is also a pain point affecting many organizations.

Addressing these issues effectively is Fractal, an engineering technology company that offers integrated solutions that enable organizations to comply with dam safety regulations, mitigate hydrological risks and climate change impacts related to their activities. They leverage deep intelligence and data to provide regulatory compliance and better operational results tailored to the clients’ specific business needs. Fractal’s solutions ensure progress on the SDGs and can directly contribute to SDGs 6, 7, 11 and 13 related indicators.

“We always strive to completely understand customer needs and offer solutions that can improve their operations. Our solutions are based on top-notch engineering techniques and a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements, which allows us to meet their expectations,” states Henrique Lucini Rocha, CEO, Fractal.

Since its conception, Fractal’s core focus has been to offer consulting services for developing water forecasting and monitoring systems. In the past, it enhanced its knowledge from cloud data (meteorological data) to track the hydrological cycle and the impact of human activities on water resources to predict and improve its sustainable use. Fractal soon expanded its tech division, attracting external funding from KPTL and EDP Ventures to fuel its journey. It also learned about the daily activities of the industry verticals it would collaborate with and defined the ones that needed to be prioritized based on its limited capacity and resources.

Using its strong tech division, Fractal consolidated its technological actions to officially launch the first version of SIG2A in 2016. This (asset management integrated system) platform comes with the critic hydrological event forecast system (SPEHC) and dam auscultation modeling system (DAMS) modules, which are provided as a SaaS solution. The SIG²A online platform allows Fractal to collect large amounts of data every hour and process it using the best available cloud computing techniques with physical modeling. It leverages ML and AI to provide fast and easy-to-understand information. It also integrates other computational solutions, including SAP and PI systems, to offer tailored solutions to clients.
A core element of the SIG²A platform is the SPEHC, Fractal’s hydro meteorological system for forecasting, monitoring, and sending flood and drought warnings. It provides information to improve dam operations, mitigate hydrological disasters, and prevent damages. The platform also consists of the DAMS module that helps manage dam safety, monitors dam structures, and organizes all the safety plan information, including the emergency action plan. Fractal’s reservoir operation system (RESOP) forms another core element that ensures hydrological balance in the reservoir and provides compliance with numerous National Electric System Operator (ONS) procedures. Currently, the hydropower capacity using Fractal´s SaaS solution is 25 GW.

We always strive to completely understand customer needs and offer solutions that can improve their operations. Our solutions are based on top-notch engineering techniques and a thorough understanding of regulatory requirements, which allows us to meet their expectations

The efficacy of Fractal’s solutions is evident from the fact that they lead to operational improvement and provide data to ensure maintenance schedules are more assertive. Leveraging its streamflow forecast information, maintenance teams can time their activities and minimize the financial impact caused by turbine outages. In addition, it also drives benefits related to regulatory compliance, mitigating legal penalties, and improving relationships between investors and regulatory agencies. Fractal’s solutions are equally impactful in mitigating the negative consequences of critical hydrological events, which are more frequent due to increasing climate changes. It leverages its solutions to predict these events, enabling preventive and preparatory measures.

Leading Fractal on its path to success is its team’s technical expertise and dedication to creating valuable strategies and identifying proper solutions for clients. The company has a strong work culture designed around giving importance to its team and encouraging them to look for simpler solutions and understand the customers’ needs efficiently.

“We are paving the way to bring its solutions to international markets and expand our offerings to other countries while deepening the knowledge of global water dynamics. We will also enter other sectors, including sanitation, agribusiness, insurance, and ports,” adds Diego Bertolin, head of investments, KPTL.
