Relational Database Systems Management Systems (RDBMS) have served the landscape for more than three decades. However, requirement of predefined schema in relational database has made processing and storage of unstructured and semi structured data difficult. In the light of these challenges, NoSQL database surfaced in the database world, which provided a common platform to all forms of data. Flagging off initially as a Twitter hashtag (#NoSQL) to address the challenges in RDBMS model, NoSQL has transformed into a technology, which has become the go to solution for today’s database issues and queries.

Advent of NoSQL database and growing need to analyze, shard, process and store all forms of data marked the genesis of MongoDB. Founded in 2007 by the same team, who were behind Double Click (now owned by Google) – a Google ad based Database Company – MongoDB is often described as the company behind the database for giant ideas. The services and solutions that the firm offers ingrains flexibility and scalability while delivering performance that the today’s applications require. “Since we first introduced MongoDB to the community in 2009, we have been laser-focused on one thing — building a technology that gets out of the way of developers and makes them more productive,” extols Eliot Horowitz, CTO and Co-founder, MongoDB

The firm’s ‘MongoDB Enterprise Advanced’ is tailored to fit into data centers of an organization and provide secured and automated database solutions. On the other hand ‘MongoDB Atlas’ introduces cloud to the database ecosystem. It is a cloud-hosted database service that helps organizations to move faster. Riding on a portfolio of impressive features such as automated scaling, high availability of clusters, built-in security and operational best practices, MongoDB Atlas is the talk of the town.

“MongoDB Atlas has allowed us to elevate our product to the next level. This put us in a position to rapidly scale with our exploding customer base,” states Justin McCormack, Co-founder and CTO at Fleetpin, a client of MongoDB

HT2 Labs, another client of MongoDB, too share Justin’s thought. The scale out architecture of MongoDB Atlas has solved data volume concerns of HT2 Labs.

Since we first introduced MongoDB to the community in 2009, we have been laserfocused on one thing— building a technology that gets out of the way of developers and makes them more productive

James Mullaney, Lead developer at HT2 Labs says – “We’ve been very happy with how MongoDB, with its horizontal scale-out architecture, is handling increased data volume; to be frank, MongoDB can handle more than our application can throw at it.”

HT2 Labs is at the forefront of learning data movement and its flagship product Learning Locker is deployed in organizations like Xerox, Raytheon and many universities. However the organization encountered difficulties to scale their projects, better manage their operations, reduce operations cost, and ensure security of sensitive data. This compelled them to embrace MongoDB Atlas.

“Security is an important aspect, especially in an industry where we’re responsible for handling potentially-sensitive student data. We were very happy with the native security features in MongoDB Atlas and the fact that we aren’t charged percentage uplift for encryption,” adds James

Founders of MongoDB acknowledge the competition in the market and consider constant innovation as the way forward. While cloud based NoSQL database solutions occupies the center-stage, the firm makes sure that security of sensitive data is not compromised.

Although the choices that NoSQL database offers are compelling, it certainly doesn’t insinuate demise of conventional database system. Going forward, we will enter the realm of polyglot persistence, a technique that uses different data storage technologies to handle varying data storage needs. To that end, MongoDB is emerging as an imminent organization owing to their hunger for innovation and will to blend technological trends to divulge impelling outcomes.
