Simplifying Secure Enterprise Cloud Connectivity

Digital transformation is being driven by the virtualization of the workforce through mobile technology and the virtualization of IT via the cloud. Networking needs to keep pace. It is simply unrealistic to think that today’s rigid, inflexible networks can marry these market forces. But there is hope in the form of an innovative approach called software defined networking (SDN).

“Nuvem Networks Inc., offers a new approach to enterprise networking, one that provides on-demand connectivity along with benefits identical to the cloud—agility, flexibility, scalability, and savings,” begins Michael Mascia, CEO of Nuvem Networks. Positioning itself as “the network as a service company®,” Nuvem Networks provides SDN technology that solves many of the issues challenging other approaches to enterprise cloud adoption, allowing organizations to deploy and manage on-demand virtual networks for secure, private cloud connectivity.

Cost-effective connectivity to different applications deployed at scale can be challenging. In this environment, the Nuvem network as a service (NaaS) platform has eliminated the complexities, helping organizations easily deploy and manage networks. “Our platform simplifies site and private cloud connectivity through automation, to reduce setup and support costs while avoiding new capital expenditure,” states Mascia.

Nuvem leverages a powerful mix of its own patented software, coupled with modern open source design, to efficiently deliver its purpose-built NaaS platform. “Our hardware agnostic solution utilizes the latest technologies, including container and network function virtualization,” says Mascia. This approach allows clients to reuse existing investments, eliminating the need to deploy additional software or hardware.

The Nuvem NaaS platform takes a different approach to SDN from edge-based SD WAN architectures. Nuvem deploys a core private network, enabling traffic control with assured performance, which open Internet-based solutions cannot. Users manage their SDNs through a web portal or APIs, saving organizations from having to invest in support resources. Clients can access their cloud instances through Nuvem’s native cloud connectivity. “Our NaaS platform leverages the cloud provider’s APIs and direct private connections to simplify connectivity to the client’s virtual private clouds,” adds Mascia.

The Nuvem NaaS platform offers clients the control and flexibility they need when designing their networks. “Native access, simplified routing and elimination of IP conflicts are excellent NaaS platform characteristics,” says Mascia. Clients control their data flows because of the SDN’s deterministic routing. “Our platform enables customers to choose public and private IP ranges, and we automatically resolve IP conflicts,” states Mascia.

In one Nuvem implementation, a service provider sought private connectivity from clients to their AWS database application. They had limited IT resources for on-boarding clients with IP address conflicts as an obstacle. Through the NaaS platform, the client rapidly deployed an SDN with connectivity to their AWS VPC, using the platform’s on-demand support of AWS Direct Connect. The client’s subscribers were quickly on-boarded to the SDN, benefiting from the NaaS platform’s simple, open, secure connectivity from the subscriber’s infrastructure. The end-users simply set their configurations, and the NaaS automation completed the site-to-AWS connectivity, for the end-to-end solution.

In addition to simplifying connectivity from diverse users to any cloud services, Nuvem also integrates with infrastructure providers. “We power our platform with Equinix’s infrastructure, and align with their Interconnection Oriented Architecture, to directly connect to customers through any equipment, access provider and cloud service provider,” says Mascia. Equinix’s facilities play a crucial role in enabling clients to attain their operational goals around the world, and Nuvem aims to increase its global footprint. “Unlike our peers, we can deliver global coverage with geographic proximity,” concludes Mascia. “At the end of the day, we want to create a win-win situation for our clients and for us.”
