Throughout history, watershed moments have inspired great minds to challenge the status quo, envision new possibilities and drive transformative change. For Andrew Nicholson and Matthew Borie, this moment came on the ill-fated day of 17 July 2014, when the world watched in horror as Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 was struck down in a conflict zone over Eastern Ukraine. The tragic loss of 298 lives shattered the illusion of safety in modern air travel, revealing a chilling vulnerability in the way risks were assessed.

The tragedy ignited Nicholson and Borie’s determination to improve aviation safety. Recognizing the inadequacies of human-based risk methods, they co-founded Osprey Flight Solutions to redefine how air travel risks are assessed and managed, ensuring that no one would ever again face such an avoidable fate.

“Every day, we see around 125,000 flights take to the skies across the globe, carrying millions of passengers to their destinations,” says Nicholson, CEO of Osprey. “The safety of these flights’ hinges on a near-superhuman ability to foresee the unforeseeable by predicting, identifying and expertly navigating the labyrinth of risks lurking along their routes. It’s a game of precision, played at 35,000 feet, where every decision counts.”

Osprey is transforming traditional risk analysis with a tech-driven approach that combines AI and large and diverse data sets to address the shortcomings of traditional, human-centered methods. Its platform leverages AI technology, including machine learning, deep learning algorithms and powerful data aggregation techniques to collect millions of data points every 15 minutes from diverse public sources in over 60 languages, including social media and official advisories. Advanced algorithms then process and organize this data to build a high-resolution, real-time model of global aviation risks. By spotting trends and anomalies, the platform provides early warnings, giving airlines the chance to act before disruptions happen. Continuous alerts keep clients informed, enabling them to quickly respond as risk levels change.

With the company’s aid, airlines can now be free of the age-old challenge of reacting to factors like social unrest, electoral changes, conflict zone activities and the lack of proactive government notices and advisories, instead stay proactive in their operations.

Osprey’s platform operates as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) solution that gives clients a self-service portal for on-demand risk assessments. It integrates with live flight tracking data, automating analysis for each flight and providing a detailed risk profile. Airlines can use these insights to optimize routes, cut insurance costs and adjust schedules based on risk patterns, resulting in smoother operations and reduced disruptions.

The company’s impact was effectively exemplified in a recent incident where it strategically handled the escalating tensions in the Middle East. The heightened concerns due to the activities of Iran-backed groups prompted airlines to seek pre-emptive solutions that guaranteed flight safety during the tumultuous period. Osprey stepped in to assist several carriers in evaluating alternative flight routes, including using Afghan airspace as a safer option. The platform's risk analysis enabled airlines to implement mitigation measures proactively, develop contingency plans and continue their operations with minimal disruption. This case highlights the critical role Osprey plays in delivering risk intelligence, empowering its clients with the insights needed for decision-making and planning to ensure safer skies during times of crisis.

Beyond customer service, Osprey also displays a far-reaching commitment to ensuring flight safety worldwide, as evidenced by the company's hosting of the World Overflight Risk Conference in Warsaw in partnership with the European Union Aviation Safety Agency and the university of Southampton. The event gathered operators, regulators and insurers and offered them a forum to discuss complex overflight risks. The conference coincided with the 10-year anniversary of the MH17 incident and recent legal rulings on overflight negligence, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts in enhancing safety standards.

Osprey is gearing up to expand the scope of its tools. The constantly evolving nature of global threats continues to power the Osprey innovative engine, enabling them to develop new solutions that help clients navigate an increasingly complex risk landscape. While aviation will remain a core focus, the company recognizes that its sophisticated conflict and risk analysis tools can also benefit other sectors. It aims to leverage its expertise in dynamic risk assessment to support strategic decision-making across various industries beyond just aviation.

As the world moves forward and global connectivity expands, flight traffic volumes will undoubtedly keep increasing. Along with this growth, Nicholson’s and Borie’s vision gains more importance. Their pioneering approach to risk management is not just a response to current challenges, but a proactive blueprint for navigating the evolving geopolitical landscape. As the stakes continue to rise, Osprey’s combination of groundbreaking technology and forward-thinking solutions are set to tackle the evolving challenges of risk analysis, ensuring safer skies in an increasingly complex world.
