Accelerating Internet Content on Campus

College/University students, faculty and staff are constantly hopping on their laptops, desktop computers, tablets, or mobile phones and logging into the college/university network to access the Internet for classroom demonstrations, homework assignments, group project collaboration, and research. Apart from college requirements and service management, accessing long-form video services like Netflix & Amazon Prime, places a hefty traffic burden on servers, consequently interrupting the user-experience. The same is true for other Internet services and apps such as Vimeo, YouTube, Twitch & Facebook, and other media such as music, iOS & other software updates. Poor Quality of Experience (QoE) can lead to complaints and satisfaction issues. This is especially true when a university’s data network has been touted as a selling point to prospective students and faculty.

PeerApp, the market leader in solutions that accelerate delivery of Internet content helps operators of campus environments to reduce network load by automatically detecting popular content (videos, music, and software updates), and storing that content locally within the campus network for faster delivery to end users. This optimizes bandwidth in a simple and straightforward way, providing the dual benefit of reducing costs and increasing speed. More speed to the end user improves QoE.

PeerApp’s main offer, the UltraBand Internet content caching solution, optimizes the delivery of Internet content—video, software, and other media/entertainment assets—across any network type (mobile, fixed or cable). “By lowering bandwidth needs, campuses can save cost, delay network upgrades, use that bandwidth for other important applications, or any combination of the three,” says Gadi Tamari, CEO, PeerApp. “We also have an analytics product that provides visibility into Quality of Experience, network performance, subscriber trends and cached content,” claims Tamari.

PeerApp stands ahead of the competition due to its innovative and open approach to caching. PeerApp’s UltraBand can handle many different types of content, has the ability to work with dynamic URLs, is an open

solution, and has capability to be deployed in any network type or location. “The educational market is an important one for us. We are proud to count colleges and universities across the country— from Florida to Minnesota to Texas—as customers. One of our college customers in Ohio reduced Netflix traffic by 50 percent after installing PeerApp Ul t raBa nd.” Educa t ional customers get to benefit from the robustness of PeerApp’s “telco-grade” solution, which is in production with several hundred mobile, cable and fixed operators globally.

By lowering bandwidth needs, campuses can save cost, delay network upgrades, or use that bandwidth for other important applications, or any combination of the three

Ease of upgrade and expansion is another PeerApp plus, “We recently had an educational institution that started with a 6Gbps PeerApp system,” explains Tamari, “Within three weeks, the system had proven itself by reducing Internet bandwidth consumption by one-third. Speed of content delivery to end-users increased dramatically—200 times faster at peak than delivery direct from the Internet. That institution is now looking to increase capacity by an order of magnitude, which can easily be achieved with a straightforward system expansion.”

“We believe that in 2015 caching will be acknowledged as an essential part of any network with video traffic,” says Tamari. “This means different things in different networks—campus environments, telco, cable, and mobile (where as much as 30 percent of video is watched today). For all types of networks, caching is moving closer and closer to the end user, and moving towards virtualization. These are areas where PeerApp brings considerable experience, knowledge and skills,” he concludes.
