In the second half of 2020, just like the past 16 years, the stage was set yet again for the Salesforces’ Dreamforce, but this time it was no jamboree—normally an appropriate epithet for one the most prominent tech conferences in the world. Due to the COVID-19 crisis, CRM giant Salesforce decided to hold "Dreamforce to You 2020" virtually to ensure the health and safety of customers, partners, employees, and communities usually attending this massive event. It’s a sharp contrast from the usual Dreamforce experience, which witnesses over 170,000 attendees descend on San Francisco over a four-day period each year. “This is not the Dreamforce any of us wanted, but it’s the Dreamforce that we got,” said Salesforce Chairman and CEO, Marc Benioff from a festive outdoor patio beneath the Salesforce Tower in San Francisco. The pioneer of cloud computing who co-founded Salesforce two decades ago, Benioff kicked off the keynote by expressing gratitude andthanking everyone—from frontline healthcare workers to Salesforce Trailblazers— who have stayed resilient through the trying times in the past year. As the fatefulyear 2020 came to a close, the Salesforce ecosystem gathered to find inspiration in digital transformation.

Benioff emphasized using business as a platform to bring in change by highlighting multiple philanthropic contributions the company has made to address issues both local to San Francisco and globally. “Dreamforce is all about you and all of us getting together and having a great time, inspiring each other, motivating each other, and doing great acts for others. Currently, our focus is on keeping our employees and their families healthy and safe, supporting our communities alongside helping our customers and partners navigate this crisis and prepare for a new normal,” he asserts.

Leaving No Stones Unturned to Create Significant Economic Impact

2020 marked the 21st anniversary of Salesforce as the global CRM leader empowering companies of every size and industry to digitally transform and create a 360-degree view of their customers. Under Benioff’s leadership, named “Innovator of the Decade” by Forbes, Salesforce has become the no. 1 provider of Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software globally. Over the last two decades, Salesforce has created an ecosystem of admins, developers, consultants, and users inspired by the Trailblazer movement to continue disrupting CRM and fostering equality and diversity. The company has been on a buying spree, setting records with various noteworthy acquisitions, such as Tableau, one of the world’s leading data visualization and business intelligence companies, in 2019.

Although Salesforce’s success streak has been extraordinarily impressive, its impact on the community and world has been far more. With a focus on the strength of the Salesforce ecosystem and Trailblazer community, the keynote address delivered a message of hope and inspiration for the future by highlighting the innovation that happens during challenging times. In order to meet the new needs brought aboutby the coronavirus pandemic, Salesforce bought and distributed 60 million pieces of personal protective equipment (PPE) to over 300 hospitals in 2020, which he attributed to the strong relationships built within the Salesforce Trailblazer ecosystem.

Despite downward economic trends severely affecting various other industries, Salesforce has continued to grow in 2020. With the increased remote work during the pandemic, higher demand for Salesforce’s cloud computing software has driven its operating margins to a record high. The company is projected to generate $21.1 billion in revenue in 2021 and $25.55 billion in revenue in 2022. Additionally, a recent IDC whitepaper sponsored by Salesforce projects that the company’s customers worldwide will enable the creation of 4.2 million new jobs and generate $1.2 trillion in new business revenue for local economies by 2025.

Benioff shifted to a hopeful tone while introducing the idea that the previous year’s challenges have compelled companies to rethink their overall strategies and adapt to a new normal. “We’re all here digitally. We’re coming together in new ways,” stated Benioff as a perfect segue into a major announcement—the acquisition of Slack Technologies, Inc, one of the most innovative enterprise communications platforms. “We’re making our platform even stronger. Together, Salesforce and Slack will shape the future of enterprise software, as well as completely transform the way everyone works in the all-digital, work-from-anywhere world,” said Benioff.

Founder of Slack, Stewart Butterfield, explained the advantages of bringing an advanced communication application like Slack into Salesforce. “Joining Slack with Salesforce will revolutionize communication for Salesforce customers as you’re really creating end-to-end digital transformation,” said Butterfield.

Slack could probably be the silver bullet Salesforce has been looking for to bolster its social enterprise vision. As the brand new interface for Salesforce Customer 360, it will redefine how people communicate, collaborate, and take action on customer information across Salesforce and information from all of their other business apps and systems. This will help users be more productive, make smarter, faster decisions and create connected customer experiences.

Making Disruption Look Seamless

The global leader in CRM recently introduced Salesforce Hyperforce, a reimagination of the company’s platform architecture built to securely and reliably deliver the Salesforce Customer 360, including Sales Cloud, Service Cloud, Marketing Cloud, Commerce Cloud, Industries and more, on major public clouds. Introduced as the greatest technological shift in the history of Salesforce, Hyperforce is a new capability that allows Salesforce to deliver the platform using public cloud infrastructure on a global scale. Hyperforce brings the Salesforce platform into the modern age by allowing customers to move their data to public cloud systems that store data locally, which wasn’t possible before the recent architectural overhaul to the Salesforce platform. It includes new solutions, ranging from contact tracing and emergency response management to employee wellness assessment and shift management, for accelerating private and public sector response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
