Protecting Critical Infrastructures with Best in Class DC Power Systems

SENS

Bill Kaewert, CTO
Electric power may be the most crucial element of any critical infrastructure. The risk of catastrophic loss of revenue, reputation, and life due to power loss is real and material. To minimize the likelihood of power outages, organizations operating critical infrastructure take great care to ensure sufficient reliable backup power supply. In data centers, for instance, electrical power is typically supported by a multi-tiered continuity plan that includes dual grid connections, UPS, and standby generators to minimize risk of outages. This is where Colorado-based Stored Energy Systems makes a huge difference by offering a portfolio of integrated DC Power Systems, high technology battery chargers, and advanced battery monitoring systems that minimize the risk of an organization’s critical system downtime.

The company manufactures industrial DC power systems and utility-grade battery chargers that deliver relentless, around-the-clock power to critical industrial controls. "With our high reliability DC power systems, we are on a mission to protect an organization’s critical infrastructure from shutdown due to power loss,” says Bill Kaewert, CTO of SENS. SENS offers solutions to the full array of companies and institutions in the electric utilities and switchgear sector, including public and private switchgear manufacturers, packagers, and municipal, co-op, or investor-owned utility companies.

SENS maintains several patents and design innovations that increase the safety & efficiency of battery charging, and early detection of weak storage batteries. These innovations significantly reduce cost of ownership and risk of unplanned system downtime

SENS has led the development of environmentally hardened, intelligent switch mode battery chargers at all power levels. Beyond unparalleled reliability, Bill notes that SENS’ switchmode products deliver significantly more power in less space. The company’s, high-powered, modular and hot-swappable EnerGenius DC is one quarter of the size and weight of competing products. It also boasts “green” credentials because, it consumes materially less electrical power, fuel in transport to the job site, and no specialized technician travel for support during its long design life.Beyond advanced power conversion and charging technologies, SENS highlights a further differentiator: uniquely efficient DC system packaging.

Other companies ship components of a power backup system loose to the job site. This causes multiple dock receipts, receiving transactions, lost parts and other friction. In contrast, SENS factory assembles and tests the complete DC system in the form of a UL listed power cabinet. SENS “PowerCab” eliminates multiple dock receipts, receiving transactions, lost parts and hardware and other transaction costs. Today’s unprecedented supply chain disruptions and qualified worker shortages have led SENS customers overwhelmingly to choose the company’s factory-integrated PowerCab over the outdated and labor-intensive practice of dock-merge and on-site assembly of DC power systems.

With our high reliability DC power systems, we are on a mission to protect an organization’s critical infrastructure from shutdown due to power loss

The Achilles heel of all non-stop power systems, however, is failure of the battery itself. Kaewert responds that SENS-owned company PBT has deployed thousands of state-of-the-art battery monitoring systems. These systems enable the company to understand when customer battery systems are likely to fail. This predictive capability minimizes risk of system downtime. SENS offers a complete monitoring ecosystem that includes on-site predictive technology, the ability to communicate with its devices, and automated data analytics. This complete ecosystem is unique to SENS, providing the company and its customers with timely insight into health of their critical power systems.

Oil and gas providers, utilities, data centers, hospitals, and government organizations profoundly depend on SENS to keep their critical processes from being disrupted. Keenly aware of the heavy responsibility imposed by these critical applications, SENS continues to invest in the development and expansion of their data analytics and managed service capabilities.
