Solving World Problems using Extended Reality (XR)

When the topic of conversation turns to XR, the overarching term for Augmented, Mixed, and Virtual Reality, most people assume the subject relates to gaming. However as new headset technology enters the market featuring collaboration, enhanced visualization and hand/eye tracking, organizations are realizing the potential of using XR to improve engagement and outcome by transforming traditional practices. The custom app development firm, SphereGen, is at the forefront of this transformation, developing XR applications in Healthcare, Manufacturing and Education.

3D visualization is a main component in realizing the benefits of XR. For example, in Healthcare, although CT/ MRI scans have always had the potential to be rendered in 3D, the technology to support those visualizations has not always existed. With the advent of 3D visualizations, a complete understanding of the relevant diagnostics can now be achieved. SphereGen, along with its product company DICOM Director, built INTRAVISION XR - a software tool that enables 3D viewing and manipulation of detailed anatomical medical models. Aspects like the spatial arrangement of organs and their internal structures are meticulously presented, allowing doctors to use the tool to explain diagnostic results clearly and easily to patients. Many Healthcare institutions, including the Children’s Hospital Nicklaus Health, leverage INTRAVISION XR to improve the understanding of medical diagnoses for children and parents.

“Living in a 3D world, SphereGen takes a different perspective through AR, VR, and MR to help enterprises collaborate, learn, and improve productivity,” says Ted Dinsmore, SphereGen president.

Manufacturing firms use SphereGen’s framework of XR tools to support the iterative process of product design and development. For example, a client building a golf cart can focus on intricate product details by interacting with a 3D prototype through SphereGen’s XR platform. Interactive prototyping is more cost effective and enables faster design cycles. On the back end, 3D product visualization engages customers and improves the communication of product functionality.

One of the many XR tools SphereGen utilizes to fuel collaboration in the enterprise world is Microsoft’s Dynamic 365 Remote Assist. It allows users to leverage smart devices to connect worldwide. SphereGen implements this tool to enable better visualization and communication for more effective remote collaboration. Along with fostering remote collaboration in Healthcare, Remote Assist is also used in the Manufacturing and Educational sectors.

In the Education space, SphereGen developed an XR reading assessment tool called VeyeZERTM Graph. Using the HoloLens 2 headset, VeyeZERTM Graph analyzes eye movements as students read passages. The analysis provides insight into a student’s potential reading impairments. Teachers use the information to identify the root cause of possible reading performance and comprehension issues. VeyeZERTM Graph is supported by Microsoft, T-Mobile, and the Barbara Bush Foundation in their efforts to improve literacy.

In approaching the development of these applications, coding for worldwide use is a key component. “….we want to architect everything so they can be scalable globally” says Dinsmore.

Beyond building for scalability in terms of growth and performance, the SphereGen Team also incorporates multilingual capability in their applications. Cognitive services are used in translations of voice and text to enable global use and targeted engagement for all employees.

XR technology is gaining momentum with evolving times. SphereGen, recognizing its value, helps clients realize XR’s potential in their digital transformations.
