Leveraging the Power of NMACS to Ensure ‘Wellness’

A steady soar in chronic illnesses and rising pressure on existing healthcare infrastructures to deliver the highest quality care in a cost-effective manner has engendered a need for a paradigm shift in healthcare. This need calls for modernization of legacy equipment, regulatory compliance and efficiency for faster deployment cycles. Alongside modernization, laws like the ‘Excellent Care for All Act’ at the public exchanges is actually giving way to interaction with end-users resulting in relentless transformation of business models in this sector. Located at Boston, Manhattan, Tech Mahindra implements, develops, customizes, and supports end-to-end healthcare solutions catering to both real-time collection of data and adherence to compliance.

With this transformation in the market, payers are encouraged towards an end-toend controllable model, a change from the twentieth century fee-for-services model to the one delivering outcomes. As a synergy of these models, Lakshmanan Chidambaram, Head – North America, Tech Mahindra, thinks, “Technology is playing a huge role in terms of embedded biometric sensors and wearable monitoring technologies where data can be collected through sensors in real-time to gain the ability to predict patient behaviour and identify problems before they happen,”—encouraging personalized healthcare through Remote Patient Monitoring.

Remote Patient Monitoring services offered by Tech Mahindra is a platform operated on the convergence of Network, Mobile, Analytics, Cloud, and Security/ Sensors/Social (commonly known as NMACS) which remotely monitors patients from the comfort of their homes. Using telehealth devices and smart health gateways, it allows patients to be equally participative in addressing their health concerns.

Once the real-time diagnostic data is transferred through the sensors, it is processed by an advanced analytics engine and transmitted to physicians to ensure continuous monitoring of chronic diseases.

In addition to that, Vinod Himatsinghani, VP-Healthcare, Insurance and Life Sciences foresees these remote-sensors being used within medical equipments to track their operation and even premonish a failure—for the ‘Hospitals of Future’.

He relates, “the quality of care and the accountability is going to increase substantially as the prominence of medical devices and innovation comes to picture. And there we touch base with NMACS.”

With years of experience the company brings from a matured sector like telecom, their role as a ‘System Integrator’ is to become one window for customers and to work on the crossway of health-care, pharmaceutical companies, and devices-companies to have a complex solution built-in to make this cross-functional verticals talk to each other. Himatsinghani, realizes, “a lot of cross-talks are happening between sub-verticals where, payers only intend to buy medical-devices, medical-device customers look for selling to hospitals, and hospitals want to have consumer education or profiling, to have better rates for payers.” Tech Mahindra plays the role of a bridge between all these diversified requirements.

With 25 years of proven experience and a presence in 51 countries, Tech Mahindra has a lot of success stories tied to its belt. But Tech Mahindra’s role in creation of 108-services (parallel to 911-services) to offer ambulatory, nursing and telemedicine services in 10 states of India, blazes a trail in healthcare sector. It uses cutting edge communications technology to deliver the quickest response possible to any distress call—be it a medical or any other emergency— that actually touches 700 million lives.

The quality of care and the accountability is going to increase substantially as the prominence of medical devices and innovation comes to picture

Tech Mahindra ponders a future where Remote Patient Monitoring can empower patients to self-manage their health conditions through data archived and mined in electronic health records by detecting indicators of early disease onset. "Looking forward, we’ve to lay-out a broad vision and have to be agile to retool ourselves. We will keep investing on NMACS because we believe the future is there," says Chidambaram.
