Beyond Visualization of Digital Twins

Toric Labs

Digital twin technology has found its way into the construction world, offering a simulation-based planning and optimization opportunity. Organizations in this industry have to work with various vendors, such as Autodesk, Trimble, and Procore, throughout the lifecycle of their projects, and digital twin technology has the potential to consolidate the data from these platforms to provide a holistic simulation. However, the focus has been more on the visualization of the digital twin rather than collating the data from various platforms. As such, organizations often end up spending significant resources to internally build a solution to aggregate data in a way that’s accessible and easy to use in the context of a digital twin. San Francisco-based Toric Labs identified and solved this issue through their no-code platform.

Toric is a data solution company aimed to make data and business intelligence user-friendly and accessible, especially for architects, engineers, and construction (AEC) professionals and real estate owners/operators. “We have built the first data analytics solution targeted toward AEC operations,” says Thiago Da Costa, Co- Founder and CEO. “Our platform allows organizations to connect their datasets and enrich the data in a way that they can easily access and integrate with other solutions without the need to build a data platform behind their digital twin.” Toric supports over 50 integrations currently—and will be supporting 100 by the end of the year—to databases, SaaS solutions, BIM software, and different types of engineering and construction management solutions. It integrates, models, and presents data in a way that makes sense to the business and allows the data pipeline to be visually built without any software engineering headaches. Toric’s platform can normalize the units of length, different currencies, spatial coordinates, and more so that it can work across systems. In case the client has special data sources that are not aligned, say internal database, the company consults with clients and builds a solution within the firewall to ensure that no data is left behind.

In addition, Toric supports the clients that have already moved to the cloud and have their own data warehouses. Through the platform, the data can be sent to their data warehouse or to the different cloud providers like Amazon S3 or Microsoft Azure. The platform ensures that the data is always complete, accurate, and current by automatically updating and refreshing the data whenever there are changes in the source systems. For instance, if there’s a change in the base system, say Procore, the platform will immediately update its own datasets based on the change.

Toric’s capabilities were on full display when they engaged with a large real estate organization that owns several properties. The organization receives a lot of models from the architecture firms they work with. The real estate organization then works with general contractors to quote the price of the development and cost. However, they didn’t have access to the files in the models. “Using Toric, they were able to extract all that data and understand what was in the models themselves. They could compare the models with the bids that were delivered by the general contractors in case they had missed anything,” says Da Costa. In this manner, the organization was able to make accurate estimations on the cost of building.

We Have Built The First Data Analytics Solution Targeted Toward AEC Operations

The Toric data solution is a welcome change in the world of AEC as most of the solutions in the space are built for software developers. And the good thing is, this is just the beginning for Toric. Notably, the company has raised $16M in funding with key participation from eminent investors like Carl Bass, former Autodesk CEO, Chris Lynch, chairman of DataRobot and CEO of AtScale, along with Plangrid co-founder, Ralph Gootee. Steering ahead, Toric aims to support newer integrations and systems and build different data science tools that people would need. Toric is also looking to enable its clients to build different models within the platform to analyze data and perform predictive analytics.
