Imagine a data transmission autobahn, where information zips along at thought’s speed, unhampered by the usual digital gridlock.

Data transfer often resembles a congested highway plagued with security risks and inefficiencies in the current landscape.

WIZnet aims to turn the data transfer pathways from congested ‘highways’ to seamless data transmission ‘autobahns’ by merging TCP/IP, MAC, and PHY into a single-chip solution.

Traditional systems handle these elements separately, leading to slower and less efficient data processing. Integrating all three streamlines the data journey and enhances security and speed, setting a new standard in the industry.

The integration represents a technological leap, offering a smarter, more reliable solution for modern data needs and significantly reducing conventional multi-chip setups’ complexities and vulnerabilities.

Superior to traditional software, WIZnet’s single-chip design also simplifies the creation of boards and the replacement of outdated components, eliminating the need for a separate PHY chip.

“The advancement is more than just an upgrade; it’s a complete overhaul of the data transmission process, propelling businesses and users into an era of speed and security,” says Jake Lee, global director of operations.

Revolutionizing Network Communication with TCP/IP TOE

The technology behind WIZnet’s offerings is the hardwired TCP/IP Offload Engine (TOE), which minimizes internet frame loss and streamlines data traffic in embedded systems by processing TCP/IP protocols through separate, dedicated resources. It stably provides fast network speeds by designing processors and their operation methods for the four network layers—from the physical layer to the transport layer— with hardware logic. This approach ensures network speeds more than twice as fast as those of software TCP/IP solutions. It maintains over 80 percent communication stability even under traffic surges and network attacks like DDoS, Smurf, and Spoofing.

This means that a system’s performance is no longer a bottleneck in network communication, allowing for faster and more reliable data handling. With TOE, even systems with limited processing power can achieve robust networking capabilities, which is crucial for IoT devices and other connected technologies.

The WIZnet Ethernet chip, commercialized as an ASIC with products like the W5500, W5100S, and W6100 models, illustrates this with features tailored to speed and efficiency. It supports a hardware-based TCP/IPv4v6 stack for 100/10 Ethernet communication, enabling low-cost IoT solutions. It also offers compatibility with various hardware platforms, like Arduino and ARM embed, ensuring that developers can quickly and easily implement these chips into their designs.

Performance tests have shown that TOE significantly outperforms software TCP/IP, especially in environments with low-spec embedded systems. For instance, using the IPERF tool, TOE achieved up to 90 Mbps in a 100 Mbps network bandwidth scenario, while software TCP/IP reached only 32 Mbps. This disparity illustrates the efficiency of WIZnet’s hardware-based approach, especially in speed.

Continuously developed, TOE technology has secured 32 technology patents, further solidifying WIZnet’s commitment to advanced and reliable networking solutions.

A Comprehensive Solution for Embedded Systems

WIZnet’s offerings stand out for their benefits—security, cost-efficiency, and longevity. The modules are designed for user convenience, reducing software development complexity. This ease of integration and cost-effective solution makes it ideal for adding networking capabilities to embedded systems. Low power consumption of these modules is particularly critical for IoT devices and battery-operated applications, where energy efficiency is paramount.

Compactness of WIZnet’s products does not compromise its robust and reliable performance. Modules handle networking tasks efficiently, ensuring stable connectivity. They also support multiple networking protocols, offering versatility for many applications. Security features within WIZnet’s modules safeguard data transmission, an essential aspect of data privacy and integrity.

Scalability is another key advantage of WIZnet’s product range, catering to various project sizes and complexities. From small DIY projects to large-scale industrial applications, WIZnet provides scalable solutions for diverse requirements. It bolsters developer support with comprehensive documentation and a supportive community, making implementation and troubleshooting more accessible.

Walking The Talk With Proven Results

The company’s impact is significant with the wide range of applications for WIZnet modules across industries like home automation, industrial automation, and healthcare. Mainly, the products that are commercialized as ASIC are currently supplying about 10 million chips per year worldwide and are being used in various network applications across industries like smart grid (EV charging, solar battery, etc.), industrial ethernet, POS terminals, and small-and medium-sized home appliances. This versatility demonstrates WIZnet’s adaptability, making it suitable for various use cases.

The advancement is more than just an upgrade; it’s a complete overhaul of the data transmission process, propelling businesses and users into a new era of speed and security

WIZnet’s hardwired TCP/IP solutions have demonstrated their value in practical applications, especially in scenarios requiring remote control in hard-to-access areas. An example is its deployment of remote cameras for securely transmitting data to the cloud, which is needed to perform in industrial temperature ranges. Products like the W5500 and the collaborative W5500-EVB-Pico with Raspberry Pi have been implemented in thousands of cameras across various countries, showcasing WIZnet’s reach and reliability.

Positive customer feedback speaks volumes about WIZnet’s strong community ties. It offers a technical forum to engage engineers and users and facilitate Q&A sessions directly. The user-friendly website, updated monthly with project content and technical resources, speaks to WIZnet’s commitment to nurturing a supportive ecosystem.

Contributions to the IOT and Hobbyist Communities

WIZnet diligently engages with significant industry trends, fostering a community that contributes to the IoT and hobbyist spaces. Notably, WIZnet’s W5100 chip was the driving force behind its rise in the early 2000s, gaining significant traction after being incorporated into Arduino’s Ethernet Shield line. This showcased technical prowess and cultivated a vibrant community around its products, marked by active participation in IoT events, online forums, and social media.

Commitment to users further exemplifies its annual design contest, a tradition that sparks innovation and solidifies user relationships. This event, a wealth of resources, and responsive technical support underscore WIZnet’s dedication to empowering developers and enthusiasts.

Wiznet’s vision, “Fabless with Content Curation,” coupled with collaboration with open-source IoT hardware platforms like Arduino and Raspberry Pi, has established its solutions as a de facto standard. This success is mainly due to open-source users’ global sharing and reuse of experiences. The emergence of ChatGPT has further bolstered Wiznet’s position in the communication chip market by facilitating the creation of versatile solutions based on these user experiences.

In response to the AI era’s shift toward the intelligent internet of things, Wiznet is advancing ‘HW acceleration technology.’ This innovation is tailored for embedded system applications, including SmartNICs for data centers. The company plans to broaden its portfolio with Internet offload NICs and MCUs, integrating these with various MCUs. Wiznet is pursuing collaborations with MCU providers and communication semiconductor firms like Broadcom to achieve this.

WIZnet’s innovations connect devices and ignite the seamless spark of an interconnected future, guiding us toward a new era of digital harmony.
