Challenges in technology to meet enterprise needs in 2013 and expectations

Recently, acquisition integration has become a critical priority given that we have acquired five companies in the last two years. Each of the acquisitions involved the integration of one or more product lines along with the need to rationalize internal systems and infrastructure. Our technology team designed and executed the integration strategies necessary to fulfill many of the strategic value drivers for the acquisitions.

Things done to elevate IT’s relationship with the business

Any team that is tapped to lead enterprise-wide business transformation efforts must have a lot of credibility and trust within the rest of the organization. Our technology team has worked very hard to create a true partnership with our business leaders. This partnership was built by providing absolute transparency into our operations and by establishing a foundation of trust earned by consistently doing what we say we are going to do in technology.

Manner in which data is used to head off problems and complications before they happen

eVestment delivers insight and intelligence to the institutional investing community through a comprehensive, global database and cloud-based analytics technology platform. The eVestment platform captures an enormous amount of forensic and usage data and we have learned to “follow the clicks” for a variety of service, retention, and research purposes. Our research teams anonymously utilize the data to evaluate industry trends and best practices.

Technology trends impacting enterprise business environment

Our core products, platforms, and corporate IT services are hosted on private and public clouds so these technologies are a fundamental part of our internal and external solution and service offerings. We offer sophisticated data and analytics solutions for the institutional investment marketplace, so historically there has not been a lot of demand for our solutions through mobile channels. But this is changing, as mobile form factors are growing larger and client usage of mobile devices and tablets is proliferating. We have started offering functionality like alerts and summary analytics and anticipate developing additional mobile functionality in the coming year.

The areas in business environment where solutions do not yet exist or not up to the mark, and which if existed, would've made job easier

Higher performance, improved security, and better service from public cloud platforms. Despite the promise and progress in public cloud infrastructures, we have not reached the point where high volume SaaS platforms with big data footprints can confidently deploy into a public cloud. Our product infrastructure utilizes dedicated, high-performance infrastructure for our application and database tiers, along with a sophisticated storage solution tailored to our specific needs. This entire infrastructure is supported by a knowledgeable managed hosting team. This type of expert service is not yet available on public clouds.

My roles and responsibilities as a CTO
My role as CTO has become much more strategic and focused on the problems we are solving for our clients. Our business partners expect that we understand the nuances of our business and are above all focused on creating the best possible solutions to the problems our client’s face.

Lessons learned and advice for fellow CIOs
Embrace change and flexibility in all aspects of technology service fulfillment. This means adopting lean or agile processes, systems, and people. In practice, this means utilizing rapid prototyping, continuous integration, absolute transparency into technology commitments, and frequent deployments to internal and external customers.
