Enhancing Asset Management in Data Centers with Intelligent RFID Integrations

The data center space is booming, driven by the rapid expansion of AI, cloud services, high-performance computing, real-time analytics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). AI is experiencing a compounded annual growth rate of 37 percent, while cloud services and IoT technologies are also growing significantly, at 17 to 18 percent annually. The surge in digital services requires substantial energy, computational power, and data storage, leading companies to invest in more efficient data centers. These facilities house thousands of tangible assets, including GPU servers, rack-mount servers, blade servers, storage systems, and networking equipment to support the growing demand for processing and storing vast amounts of data. To ensure these costly investments operate at peak efficiency, businesses need clear visibility into asset performance and the ability to track their physical movements.

With a team that has delivered highly scalable asset visibility solutions for over 20 years, that’s where Acceliot comes in. The company offers intelligent RFID solutions to optimize the value of data center infrastructure management (DCIM) systems and help data center managers manage assets in real time. These solutions are designed to maximize equipment availability and uptime, enhance maintenance and retrofit upgrade programs, and reduce operating expenses while increasing staff productivity.

"We recognize the significant impact that AI workloads and cloud computing have on today's data centers,” says Shawn Manesh, Acceliot, CEO. “We have developed an intelligent platform and are partnering with industry leaders to deliver real-time visibility for their critical assets.”

Acceliot’s real-time locating system (RTLS) solution is purpose-built to operate in highly metallic and densely packed environments. Its real-time location system thrives in these conditions, where metal enclosures, elaborate rack systems, custom-built servers, storage devices, power and cooling hardware, security cages, and switching assets make tracking challenging. As many computing systems will be upgraded with more powerful processors, next-generation memory devices, and faster connectivity ports, Acceliot technology treats all hardware as ‘assets in motion’ and continuously monitors them throughout their lifecycles (whether or not they are installed and operating in a rack). Acceliot’s readers and software collect realtime contextual data on each asset’s status and location, from arrival at the loading dock to secure storage to installation, maintenance, retrofitting, and ultimately to decommission. The team has led breakthrough R&D efforts to improve directionality and discrimination techniques that enable unprecedented accuracy, real-time visibility, while maintaining low enough latency to allow time-sensitive production decisions and functions to operate at full speed and capacity.

We recognize the significant impact that AI workloads and cloud computing have on today's data centers

Paul Barriga, CTO“The location, status, and contextual data that asset visibility initiatives deliver to data center operators is critical to maximizing efficiency across the board,” says Paul Barriga, CTO. “We have developed our STARflex RFID reader architecture, Edge and Visibility platform software to interoperate with a Data Center operator’s incumbent systems and processes to deliver the most accurate view of installed, in-service, surplus, and new computing assets.”

The company has also pioneered the integration of environmental IoT sensors into its solutions portfolio to improve situational awareness for data center managers. By tracking key factors like heat and humidity, these sensors add value to DCIM software systems and ensure comprehensive environmental measurements and efficient workflows. Sensor-based approaches enhance security management by monitoring access to data cabinets through the added detection of service personnel badge IDs equipped with RFID tags. This results in workflow automation that reduces human error and improves overall efficiency through a streamlined check-in and check-out process.

A notable client success story highlights Acceliot’s expertise and proficiency in meeting the modern needs of data centers. A major data center client with locations in the U.S. and India implemented an RFID tracking solution to monitor servers in their facilities used for storage, retrofitting, and hands-on maintenance. Tagging new hardware upon arrival helped the client optimize costs and track assets in real-time.

Acceliot also helped install antennas in aisles to monitor transitions from labs to the data center, providing high-resolution accuracy.

Further assessing their needs, the company developed a customized RFID solution that included fixed readers at strategic locations, such as entry and exit points. Acceliot experts assisted in selecting RFID tags for each asset class and consulted on reader installation and software integration. The project enabled real-time asset tracking, automated inventory updates, and system alerts.

The consistent support and efficiency have resulted in a lasting partnership between Acceliot and the client, maximizing its reach to a larger audience through word of mouth.

In a world where the demand for real-time data, video, and previously unimagined horsepower to process AI-informed workloads is rising at an accelerated rate, Acceliot is not just keeping pace; it is pioneering the way forward. Its innovative use of RFID technology streamlines asset management, contributes to digital twin dashboards of DC performance and transforms the way data centers operate, ensuring that they remain agile and effective in the face of increasing complexity.
