CIOREVIEW >> Enterprise Data Management >> Actian

Actian has been recognized by CIOReview Magazine as the recipient of “Top Data Intelligence Platform 2025,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry. This profile has been developed by the CIOReview research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Marc Potter, CEO.

Pioneering Data Intelligence for a New Era

Actian

Marc Potter, CEO
While companies rush to implement AI, a fundamental problem persists: most organizations can't even locate their data, let alone trust it. These are exactly the concerns Marc Potter, CEO of Actian, regularly hears in his conversations with customers across industries.

“Our entire strategy is built around understanding and responding to customer needs, and these issues have only intensified as data becomes more decentralized,” Potter said. With the proliferation of data sources, growing volumes, and complex integrations from siloed sources, data inevitably becomes fragmented and inaccurate, undermining confidence in decision making.

Recognizing that traditional data management tools weren't designed for today's complex, fragmented enterprise environments, Potter refused to accept the status quo and made a bold bet: transform Actian to offer a comprehensive data intelligence platform that turns scattered data into a strategic asset across hybrid, cloud, edge, and on-premises environments.

The AI Catalyst Reshaping Data Strategy

With AI driving companies to fundamentally reassess their data strategies, Potter underscores the importance of data trust. "Every company I talk to wants to responsibly use AI, but to do that, you need to identify which data you can trust," he said. "If you don't trust your data and you use AI, you risk undermining your entire initiative."

He adds that while companies might historically have accepted imperfect data quality—say 80% accuracy—AI demands greater precision, since unreliable data can cause AI systems to amplify errors rather than deliver the desired business value.

Building on Trust Through User-First Design

Actian's user-centric approach reflects its commitment to long-term customer relationships that stems from its origins. The company's first database originated from UC Berkeley in the early 1970s, and that same institution remains an Actian customer today. This decades-long relationship exemplifies Potter's philosophy about establishing lasting partnerships built on user-centric customer support.

Potter applied this philosophy to product development. He steered Actian to deliver user-centric, data-driven enterprise solutions designed to tackle today’s challenges: data discovery, data classification and quality, data lineage and governance, and confidently leveraging AI. As Potter explains, "We are building technology that simplifies data complexity and drives adoption through ease of use, flexibility, and extensibility. It is about putting the power of data in the hands of the customer, helping them understand their data with business context, and doing so in a way that enables the business to use data as a competitive differentiator and achieve measurable business outcomes."

The Actian Data Intelligence Platform

Under Potter’s leadership, Actian launched its flagship solution, the Actian Data Intelligence Platform, a cloud-native SaaS solution enabling smarter data usage through automated metadata extraction and governance by design. Built on a federated knowledge graph architecture and AI-driven observability, the platform democratizes access to AI-ready data by enabling organizations to quickly discover, understand, and trust decentralized enterprise data assets.

By designing our architecture with the future in mind, we ensure that our solutions can grow and evolve with our customers' needs.

Actian's solution provides customers with a comprehensive view of their data landscapes while ensuring compliance and security by delivering ready-to-use, governed data products. Ideal for industries where speed, security, and regulatory compliance are critical, Actian primarily serves large enterprises in finance, manufacturing and healthcare. The platform’s core capabilities include data governance, stewardship, cataloging, lineage, quality, and an enterprise data marketplace.

To prevent rework and waste, the Actian Data Intelligence Platform embeds governance by design early in the data lifecycle using a "data contract first" approach. This philosophy ensures data is well-documented and governed from its source to its consumption, giving businesses the accuracy and reliability they need to drive innovation and make confident decisions.

Built-in scanners and APIs automate metadata harvesting to maintain an up-to-date view of the enterprise's complete data landscape. A graph-based business glossary enhances data literacy and brings relevant context to AI initiatives.

Central to the platform is a knowledge graph that captures complex data relationships and provides context about how information flows through an organization. This architecture enables users to understand a dataset's history, modifications, and trustworthiness.

"Data relationships aren't hierarchical—they're complex and interconnected," Potter said. "Our platform builds trust by showing users exactly where their data originated and how it evolved. When you can trace that complete journey, you gain confidence in using it for critical decisions."

Importantly, Actian designed experiences tailored for technical and business teams because different users need different approaches. Potter envisions this data interaction as intuitive as Google search, where business users can easily search and understand their enterprise data with the same simplicity they expect from consumer technology.

Proving Value Through Adoption

Potter points to several customer deployments that demonstrate how the platform's user-friendly design translates into measurable business impact. For example, a major pharmaceutical company deployed the Actian Data Intelligence Platform after experiencing poor adoption rates with their previous solution. With Actian, the customer saw exponential growth in usage, reaching 10,000 users within three months. The company now has over 30,000 active users and expects to reach full enterprise adoption soon.

”Our platform builds trust by showing users exactly where their data originated and how it evolved. When you can trace that complete journey, you gain confidence in using it for critical decisions.”

German association GEMA, which pays creators revenues from public music usage, leverages Actian’s platform to facilitate the creation of data products and contracts while enabling data discovery. Within the first year, GEMA integrated 20 systems and developed over 250 data products, realizing €1 million in annual cost savings.

France's national employment agency, France Travail, deployed the platform to break through data silos across their organization, which supports five million job seekers. The agency cataloged 20,000 datasets with 30,000 glossary definitions across 30 connected platforms, achieving 77% satisfaction across departments.

These successes reinforce Potter's core belief that technical capabilities are meaningless without user adoption. "Superior features and functionality are irrelevant if customers don't embrace and actively use the solution," he reflects. "In the SaaS environment, widespread adoption is the ultimate measure of success."

What drives adoption comes down to how users experience the technology. Potter consistently hears that limited adoption is the primary challenge with competitive solutions and despite significant investments, organizations remain restricted to narrow use cases because complexity prevents broader deployment.

These insights informed his product philosophy. Unlike other solutions that require extensive technical expertise, the Actian Data Intelligence Platform is designed to be intuitive and accessible across all skill levels. Potter emphasizes that Actian’s platform enables users to confidently interact with their data regardless of their technical background.

Thinking Ahead of the Market

Staying ahead of industry evolution is central to Actian's strategy. Potter believes his company’s competitive advantage lies in anticipating market changes and investing in capabilities that prepare customers for emerging challenges before they become critical business issues.

To deliver on this promise of future-readiness, the platform offers what Potter describes as "completeness in solution"—a platform approach where customers can pick and choose components. "I want to give the customers the option to use as much of it as they want natively or integrate with what they already have," he explains. This flexibility extends to data quality, classification, and other functions, allowing customers to use Actian's native capabilities or integrate with existing tools.

Expanding for the Future
Looking ahead, Potter sees deployment flexibility as equally important as platform flexibility. Actian will be expanding deployment capabilities with virtual private cloud (VPC) options that provide enhanced security and greater customer control over their data environments. These options will offer customers more management flexibility while maintaining higher security levels than traditional cloud deployments.

This meets growing market demands for data sovereignty and opens opportunities in security-conscious verticals where organizations require stricter control over their data infrastructure.

Helping Businesses Unlock the Full Potential of Their Data

The Actian Data Intelligence Platform being named as the Data Intelligence Platform of the Year validates Potter's conviction that sophisticated technology must be paired with intuitive user experiences. The award acknowledges that data intelligence solutions succeed not just through technical capabilities, but through their ability to drive widespread adoption.

His customer-driven approach—from listening to enterprise leaders about their data challenges to structuring product teams around business outcomes—has positioned Actian to address the core problems of discovering, understanding, and trusting data assets. As organizations continue navigating the demands of AI implementation while managing increasingly decentralized data environments, Potter's philosophy of building trust through transparency and ease of use provides a clear path forward.

With a proven platform architecture, expanding deployment options, and unwavering focus on customer success, Actian is prepared to continue reshaping how enterprises discover, govern, and utilize their data assets in an AI-driven future.
