In theory, Big Data offer companies tremendous business insight. In reality, CIOs and senior IT professionals are having a tough time sorting through petabytes of data pouring into their organizations and then turning that data into actionable results. “The challenge lies in finding relevant data quickly, understanding it, and transforming information to knowledge,” states William D. Slessman, CEO and President, BASELAYER. “CIOs are well versed in how Big Data has made an impact at the application layer of the IT stack. However, the industry professionals should consider the opportunity to apply Big Data techniques to the robust sensor network present at the infrastructure layer of the stack.”

Headquartered in Chandler, AZ, BASELAYER manufactures modular data centers (MDC), develops infrastructure management software and enables big data analytics. The company tracks vital information about the data center’s power, cooling and network infrastructure to help identify trends, predict behavior and empower decision makers. “We see Big Data as an opportunity to improve sustainability, increase security and understand real levels of inventory/capacity in the IIoT Era,” says Slessman.

BASELAYER technology platform includes two product families – BASELAYERTM Anywhere and BASELAYERTM RunSmart. Standardized, yet scalable, BASELAYER Anywhere is a software defined MDC which is IT agnostic, provides deployment flexibility and offers energy efficiency needed to deliver performance while reducing total cost. BASELAYER RunSmart OS is a unified operating system used for connecting, visualizing and analyzing infrastructure performance—from any device, anywhere, at any time.

“We have developed a platform built on a repeatable and manufactured unit of data center deployment,” states Slessman. BASELAYER’s unique three-fold design includes elements of hardware, automation and software. This layered approach delivers unprecedented value to the end customer. The hardware layer standardizes around data center capacity deployable anywhere in the world. The automation layer brings intelligent control to the MDC by automating critical functionality (power, cooling, etc.) and enables connectivity/security at the infrastructure layer.

Finally, the software product empowers customers to organize, visualize, control and analyze key infrastructure elements.

We enable our customer to utilize their critical infrastructure in ways they’ve never been able to do before

The company’s team is working with IO, the second largest private colocation service provider in the world, to create adaptive capacity and resource planning based on real time consumed and connected load. The information is run through a Hadoop cluster and is critical in forecasting future demand on behalf of its enterprise customers. As a result of this work, IO can analyze various elements of capacity across the data center and understand the impact to revenue, free cash flow and capital/operational expense on a deal-by-deal basis.

Additionally, BASELAYER has enabled big data capabilities by leveraging strong partnerships with analytics solution providers. “By aggregating best-of-breed Big Data solutions, we offer users access a variety of analytics platforms all in single pane of glass.” says Slessman. “By revolutionizing performance, we enable our customers to utilize their critical infrastructure in ways they’ve never been able to do before.”

With standardization, visualization, automation and simulation, BASELAYER is able to transform the data center to a simpler, smarter machine. With a relentless focus on continuous improvement and systematic innovation, BASELAYER aims to understand the needs of its customers, maintain a focused set of hardware/software products and ensure their platform reflects the highest levels of quality.
