Datadog: Modernizing Observability for the Age of AI

Datadog (NASDAQ: DDOG)

Modern technology environments are becoming harder to understand as applications, infrastructure, data and security controls multiply across distributed cloud architectures. AI is intensifying that complexity by introducing autonomous agents, multiple models and unpredictable workflows into systems that must function reliably. As innovation accelerates, teams must navigate an expanding web of dependencies and potential failure points without compromising system reliability.

Datadog (NASDAQ: DDOG) approaches the problem by bringing observability and security into a unified platform designed to give teams context across their technology environments. Its objective is broader than collecting telemetry as teams need to understand what is happening, determine why it matters, and act before disruptions reach customers. Applications, infrastructure, logs, user experiences, cloud environments, data and security signals can therefore be examined within a connected operating picture.

Making Complexity Observable

Modern systems rarely fail within one neatly defined layer, which makes isolated monitoring increasingly inadequate for understanding production behavior. A service problem may originate in infrastructure, emerge through application dependencies, and ultimately appear as a degraded customer experience. Datadog connects those layers, enabling teams to follow relationships across applications, infrastructure and end-user activity within one workflow.

End-to-end application performance monitoring helps teams connect mobile and browser experiences with backend services, individual user actions, code and database queries. Digital Experience Monitoring extends that visibility into how customers actually experience digital products, linking user behavior with technical performance and business outcomes.

Security follows the same principle of contextual visibility, bringing security signals into workflows where teams already investigate application and infrastructure behavior. Datadog’s security capabilities span code, cloud, applications, APIs and sensitive data, helping teams investigate risks without relying on disconnected tools.

Unified context also matters across organizational boundaries as development, operations and security teams often see different symptoms of the same underlying event. A shared platform reduces the need to reconcile separate dashboards before teams can establish what changed and determine an appropriate response. Observability becomes more consequential when business leaders also need to understand how technical changes affect customers, revenue and product performance. Datadog’s broader platform direction connects technical telemetry with digital experience and experimentation, giving teams a stronger basis for decisions about releases and product investments.

Bringing AI into the Operating Model

AI changes observability because modern applications increasingly depend on systems whose behavior can vary according to models, prompts, tools and agent decisions. Traditional application monitoring alone cannot explain why an agent produced a poor result, consumed unexpected resources or introduced failures across dependent services.

Datadog’s Agent Observability provides visibility across requests, services, upstream and downstream dependencies, agent behavior and end-user impact within one connected platform. Teams can trace individual agent steps, inspect execution graphs, examine latency and token usage and compare prompts, models and configurations against production data.

AI observability also extends into the infrastructure supporting model workloads, where GPU capacity and performance can influence reliability and operating costs. Datadog introduced GPU Monitoring to help teams plan capacity, troubleshoot issues, prevent costly failures and reduce wasted spending as AI workloads expand.

Operational visibility becomes especially important as organizations adopt multiple models and increasingly complex agent workflows across production environments. Datadog’s 2026 State of AI Engineering report found that 69 percent of organizations use three or more models, while agent framework adoption doubled year over year.

Turning Visibility into Action

Visibility creates value only when teams can translate signals into decisions, especially during incidents where delays can compound technical and business consequences. Datadog increasingly applies AI to investigation and response, moving observability from passive visibility toward active operational assistance.

Bits Investigation can autonomously investigate alerts, surface likely root causes and recommend or take actions across systems, helping teams accelerate incident response. Bits AI capabilities extend that approach across development, operations and security workflows, supporting investigations without forcing teams to reconstruct context manually.

Datadog also opened its platform to AI-driven workflows through the generally available Datadog MCP Server, which gives AI agents secure access to live observability data. Developers can use logs, metrics and traces within AI coding agents while maintaining established security and governance controls around operational access.

Connecting Security with Observability

Security teams increasingly operate within environments where vulnerabilities, misconfigurations, application behavior and infrastructure events influence one another. Datadog’s approach brings security context closer to observability data, allowing teams to investigate threats alongside the technical conditions surrounding them.

At DASH 2026, its annual flagship conference focusing on cloud observability, security and AI-powered operations, Datadog introduced expanded capabilities for AI-assisted investigation and remediation across code, cloud, APIs and sensitive data. Security teams can automate threat hunts and SIEM investigations with Bits agents while addressing vulnerable dependencies directly from findings and protecting sensitive workloads.

FedRAMP High-certified observability also supports organizations operating within demanding security environments, extending Datadog’s unified approach into workloads requiring stringent controls. Security, therefore, becomes part of the same operational picture as performance and reliability, rather than another disconnected layer requiring separate investigation workflows.

Building for Autonomous Operations

Datadog’s product direction increasingly reflects a broader shift from monitoring systems toward helping teams operate increasingly autonomous technology. The platform now spans observability, security, experimentation, AI agents and operational intelligence, creating a foundation for teams managing software that changes continuously.

Datadog Experiments connects product experimentation with observability, enabling teams to design, launch and measure experiments while understanding effects on user behavior, application performance and business outcomes. Feature Flags similarly connects feature management with observability data, supporting safer releases, automated rollouts and faster troubleshooting.

Investment in research reinforces the company’s long-term direction, with Datadog reporting more than 1 billion dollars in annual non-GAAP research and development spending. The acquisition of Adaptive ML adds reinforcement learning operations expertise to Datadog AI Research, supporting work around specialized agents, models and observability.

Platform breadth alone, however, does not create operational value unless teams can navigate it without adding another layer of complexity. Datadog continues to invest in integrations, open standards and workflows that keep telemetry useful across changing architectures and technology choices. OpenTelemetry contributions also support a broader ecosystem approach, helping organizations preserve flexibility as architectures and telemetry requirements continue to evolve.

Scaling AI responsibly requires more than stronger models because production systems must remain observable, secure, explainable and operationally manageable as complexity increases. Datadog’s strategy focuses on giving teams a shared view of technology and the means to act from that view. Operational control becomes the bridge between rapid innovation and dependable production performance across increasingly autonomous technology environments.

Datadog's recognition as the Top AI-Powered Observability and Security Solutions 2026 reflects its approach to unifying operational visibility, AI-assisted investigation and security across complex digital systems.
