Engine Brasil, a leading SAP consulting powerhouse, has carved out the distinctive SAP HCM-as-a-Service niche in Brazil’s increasingly complex enterprise landscape and unique regulatory environment. Since its founding in 2011, Engine pioneered an innovative Business-as-a-Service model, becoming the first SAP partner in Brazil to deliver real SaaS applications fully based on services with a clear mission: to help companies compete globally by providing solutions that increase their competitiveness against both local and international players.

“We have become a key partner in helping enterprises from public institutions to large multinationals navigate the complexities of modern HR management,” says Fábio Barnes, CEO.

Today, SAP HCM-as-a-Service represents the natural evolution of this unique model, enabling clients to access a true One-Stop Shop for enterprise management solutions, transforming HR into a strategic engine for workforce performance, data-driven decision-making, and digital-first employee experience.

While HCM has been central to Engines growth, the company’s expertise extends far beyond people management. Over the last decade, Engine has expanded into high-impact industries such as logistics, consumer goods, manufacturing, life sciences and public services, delivering end-to-end SAP solutions built on global best practices. This diversification strengthened Engines position as a long-term transformation partner, capable of integrating Success Factors People Management, S/4HANA, Analytics, and SAP BTP IA, IOT and RPA innovations into a cohesive digital core that supports mission-critical operations at scale.

This vision for SAP HCM-as-a-Service is what sets Engine apart in the marketplace. While many global consultancies use standardized solutions, Engine understood that a one-size-fits-all approach would not be effective in Brazil. The company embraced the philosophy that successful HCM implementation requires more than just technical expertise; it requires a deep understanding of the cultural, legal, and operational challenges unique to Brazil.

”We have become a key partner in helping enterprises from public institutions to large multinationals navigate the complexities of modern HR management.”

To meet this need, Engine developed its Reference Models. These models incorporate Brazil’s legal requirements, such as eSocial and the country’s labor reforms, directly into the architecture of SAP HCM solutions. The result is a tailored system that is compliant with local regulations from day one, offering clients a significant competitive advantage by reducing the risk of non-compliance and the associated penalties. This customized approach has allowed Engine to deliver SAP HCM solutions that are not only scalable but also sensitive to the nuances of Brazilian business practices.

Adapting SAP HCM for Brazilian Enterprises

At the core of Engine’s approach to SAP HCM-as-a-Service is its ability to adapt the solution to meet the unique needs of Brazilian businesses. Engine’s Reference Models take into account the regulatory landscape, labor laws, and tax requirements specific to Brazil, ensuring that businesses remain compliant while optimizing their HR processes. These models are not static; they are constantly refined as new laws and regulations are enacted, ensuring that Engine’s solutions remain ahead of the curve.

One of the key challenges that Engine faces when implementing SAP HCM in Brazil is the country’s complex tax and labor regulations. With frequent changes in these laws, it is essential that businesses remain up to date with the latest requirements. Engine’s team of in-house experts closely monitors changes in Brazil’s labor laws and ensures that clients’ systems are always updated to reflect the newest regulations.

For instance, when eSocial rules were updated, Engine quickly analyzed the impact on its clients and adapted their systems accordingly, ensuring that they remained compliant during the rollout of the new requirements.

In addition to its regulatory expertise, Engine’s success is also attributed to its ability to integrate SAP HCM with other business functions such as finance, operations, and talent management. By integrating these systems, Engine enables businesses to streamline processes across the entire employee lifecycle, from recruitment and onboarding to performance management and career development. This integrated approach leads to better data visibility, more informed decision-making, and improved operational efficiency.

A Flagship Case of Success

One of the most notable successes of Engine’s approach to SAP HCM-as-a-Service is its work with Portos do Paraná, one of Brazil’s most important public-sector organizations. Portos do Paraná is responsible for managing one of the country’s busiest ports, and its HR and payroll processes are highly complex due to the varied employment regimes it manages. With employees working under different legal frameworks, including CLT employees, commissioned personnel, and Jeton board members, Portos do Paraná needed a solution that could accommodate these complexities while remaining compliant with the stringent regulatory requirements of the public sector.

We also offer ongoing training and support to ensure that clients are always equipped to leverage the latest features and functionality of their SAP HCM systems.

Engine’s team took on the challenge of implementing a comprehensive SAP landscape for Portos do Paraná, including SAP S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Employee Central Payroll, and SAP Analytics Cloud. The payroll system in particular was a major hurdle, as public-sector HR requires a high level of transparency, auditability, and governance. Engine’s team worked closely with Portos do Paraná’s HR and finance teams to design a solution that could accommodate the different employment regimes while maintaining a clean-core SAP structure.

The results of this project were significant. Portos do Paraná’s payroll process, which had previously been slow and prone to errors, was stabilized and streamlined. The integration with SAP S/4HANA also allowed for faster financial closing, enabling the port authority to close its books within days rather than weeks after the end of each month. This improvement allowed Portos do Paraná to allocate resources more efficiently and focus on its core mission of managing one of Brazil’s key logistics hubs.

The success of the Portos do Paraná project extended beyond payroll. Engine’s solution transformed HR processes across the organization, from recruitment and onboarding to performance management and career development. By implementing SAP SuccessFactors, Portos do Paraná modernized its approach to talent management, creating a transparent and efficient recruitment process that adhered to the principles of public governance while reducing hiring times. The integration of the Performance Management and Career and Succession modules enabled managers to make data-driven decisions about promotions and talent development, fostering a more meritocratic workplace.

In addition to these HR improvements, the project delivered significant cost savings through better workforce allocation and overtime management. By integrating SAP Analytics Cloud, Portos do Paraná gained unprecedented visibility into its workforce data, allowing the organization to make more informed decisions about labor allocation and resource planning. This not only improved operational efficiency but also helped the port authority align its HR practices with broader institutional goals.

Cultural Change and Leadership Engagement

A key component of Engine’s success is its ability to drive cultural change within organizations. Engine recognizes that implementing SAP HCM solutions is not just about technology; it is about transforming how HR operates within an organization. Digital transformation requires a shift in mindset, and Engine helps clients navigate this change by working closely with leadership teams to ensure that executives are actively engaged in the process.

“Successful programs have one common trait: visible, vocal, and consistent engagement from the C-level,” Barnes explains. “HR transformation is not just an IT project; it is a strategic business transformation.”

To support this cultural shift, Engine incorporates comprehensive change management strategies into its implementation methodology. This includes embedding a Change Management Officer (CMO) in every major project to ensure that communication, training, and stakeholder engagement remain aligned with business outcomes. The company also uses a comprehensive value-measurement framework that tracks both quantitative and qualitative indicators of success. These include internal NPS scores, adoption rates, HR productivity metrics, and feedback from leadership and employees about their experience with the new system.

Adapting to Emerging Trends and Technologies

As the business world continues to evolve, Engine remains at the forefront of technological innovation, integrating emerging technologies such as AI, RPA, and machine learning into its SAP HCM solutions. These technologies have transformed how HR departments manage tasks such as recruitment, performance management, and employee engagement.

AI-driven screening has significantly reduced time-to-hire by automating the candidate screening process. By analyzing resumes and matching candidates to job requirements, the system can quickly identify high-potential applicants, reducing the time spent reviewing resumes manually. Predictive analytics powered by AI helps HR teams identify high-turnover risks, enabling them to take proactive steps to retain key employees before they leave.

RPA has automated many of the repetitive tasks traditionally handled by HR departments, such as payroll reconciliations, compliance checks, and contract generation. This has led to significant productivity gains, with clients reporting reductions in HR transactional workload of up to 30 percent within just a few months of implementing RPA.

These innovations are part of Engine’s broader strategy to help clients unlock the full potential of their HR data. By combining SAP-native analytics with AI and RPA, Engine is enabling businesses to automate routine processes and gain actionable insights that drive better decision-making and improve workforce productivity.

Continuous Improvement and Long-Term Partnership

Engine’s commitment to continuous improvement is another reason for its success. The company does not view its engagements as one-time projects but as long-term partnerships. This commitment is reflected in its focus on continuous learning, process improvement, and the application of new technologies.

One of the ways Engine ensures continuous improvement is through its Incremental Reference Models. These models evolve with every new implementation, incorporating real-world lessons and client feedback to create a constantly improving solution.

“We also offer ongoing training and support to ensure that clients are always equipped to leverage the latest features and functionality of their SAP HCM systems,” says Barnes.

Engine’s approach to SAP HCM-as-a-Service has earned it recognition across the industry. In 2025, the company was awarded the ISG Paragon Award for Transformation of the Year in Latin America for its successful implementation of SAP S/4HANA and SuccessFactors at Portos do Paraná. Additionally, Engine was named a Rising Star by the Information Services Group, highlighting its rapid growth and ability to deliver innovative solutions that meet the unique needs of Brazilian enterprises.
