Streamlining Effective Database Management

IDERA

Rob Reinauer, Director of SQL Server Product Management
The importance of data is now well-known, and in today’s world of cloud and virtualization, securing and managing this data has become even more complicated and convoluted. The steady growth in the diversity of database deployments, from virtualization to private and public clouds, continues to introduce new variables and risks to effectively maintaining database performance, availability, compliance, and security. Within corporate datacenters, IT staff follows defined, established procedures based on decades of experience. Extending these procedures and best practices to address deployments in the cloud is still very much an ongoing process. On top of that, continually evolving regulations, regarding how this data is kept and maintained, interact with these evolving technologies and procedures in unforeseen and sometimes unfortunate ways. The end result: cost effectively achieving high levels of confidence in a company’s data infrastructure continues to grow more difficult, even as that same data infrastructure has become crucial to the success of modern companies.

Founded in 2003, IDERA provides industry leading database management and data modeling tools for designing, debugging, monitoring and securing data infrastructures. These tools allow companies to have real, documentable confidence in their data systems. “Our products radically lower the cost of ownership for large scale deployments of Microsoft infrastructure. This is accomplished through powerful but easy to use tools which turbo-charge productivity for database designers, developers and administrators,” asserts Rob Reinauer, Director of SQL Server Product Management at IDERA. He adds, “As a company, we are all about simplicity, ease of use, and accelerating the productivity of data professionals.”

IDERA’s tools support SQL Server deployments in corporate data centers, public cloud infrastructures, and hybrid combinations. This provides database administrators and their companies and clients incredible deployment flexibility and control of their data management lifecycle. “We offer a deep portfolio of incredibly powerful tools which help IT organizations mitigate data risk and cost effectively build confidence in their data infrastructures regardless of where they are deployed. Our customers are typically evaluating and deploying to multiple public cloud platforms. Years ago, we made flexible, full cloud support across all the major cloud platforms a corporate priority,” states Reinauer.

Great database administrators know about performance and availability problems before their end users do. IDERA SQL Diagnostic Manager provides a single point of control for the monitoring of availability and performance for all deployed SQL Server instances across thousands of Windows server instances spread across physical hardware, virtual machines, Azure and AWS. Intuitive root cause analysis of SQL Server query performance, with the assistance of embedded expert systems, rapidly identifies performance constraints and offers solutions.

As a company, we are all about simplicity, ease of use, and turbo-charging the productivity of database professionals

Historical snapshots allow quick drill down to evaluate system state at the moment alerts were issued and in the preceding intervals leading up to the alert as well.

As mentioned above, in our current, rapidly evolving regulatory environment, companies are legally required to implement a broad range of regulatory compliance behaviors, to comply with HIPAA, PCI, SOX, GDPR, and other data protection guidelines. IDERA SQL Compliance Manager allows administrators to easily configure, monitor and report on the regulatory compliance status of SQL Server instances and databases deployed to both data centers and the major public cloud platforms. Single-button selection of the relevant regulatory guidelines radically simplifies this process and makes it accessible to a much broader audience. Deep, real-time auditing of user activities such as logins, data access, and data modifications allows database professionals to identify potential compliance violations and, more significantly for regulatory compliance, certify that they didn’t occur.

IDERA SQL Secure identifies vulnerabilities in SQL Server and Azure environments by setting strong security policies across enterprise database deployments, establishing and controlling database access permissions, and then monitoring for security policy violations. With these tools, passing an audit is as simple as producing the appropriate, pre-configured reports, whereas consultants and employees could easily take weeks to perform the same tasks manually. As IT-established procedures for managing data in the cloud continue to develop and mature, it is practically a business necessity that companies adopt tools which can analyze and validate SQL Server configurations. Doing it by hand for large numbers of instances is not practical or safe.

The ability to predictively alert administrators of situations that are going to require attention before they become critical problems is a huge area of industry interest and investment. “IDERA has an ongoing broad predictive analytics focus across several of our product lines. Our intent here is to greatly reduce the necessity of administrators to respond to critical alerts by providing early warnings of developing conditions which can then be managed, through routine processes,” explains Reinauer. He continued, “For us, it always comes back to, ‘How can we drastically increase database professionals’ productivity?’ Over and over, we have found that turbo-charging our customers’ productivity leads to lower costs of ownership for their data infrastructure deployments.”
