Mitigating the hardship of individually managing each user computer, Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) provides organizations with the capability to control entire computer infrastructure through a central server. System Integrators already provide centrally managed desktops as a service and clients as a service for public sector institutions. These devices securely connect to cloud hosted virtualized desktops. IBM with their acquisition of Softlayer as well as Amazon WebServices with their Cloud offering show that Cloud Computing has arrived in today’s IT infrastructure. “The demand for a cost-efficient solution to securely manage the data and computer infrastructure drives companies to shift to VDI environment,” says Heiko Gloge, Managing Director, Partner, IGEL Technology. Enhancing the VDI experience with its zero touch deployment of Thin Client solutions is IGEL Technology. “We maintain a unique customer-centric approach in providing solutions and building services as per the requirement of the client using a software-defined methodology,” adds Gloge.

The Thin client solutions developed by IGEL helps public sector organizations saves much of the IT cost on the modern infrastructure, as well as contributes to green IT initiatives by reducing carbon foot prints of the infrastructure. Thin clients are energy efficient and consume power in the range of 5W to 10W compared to 90 to 150W consumed by desktop PCs. Additionally migrating to a VDI solution is made easy with cost efficient software thin clients like IGELs UDC2 or the UMA for Windows 7 devices. They allow to continue to use the existing PCs and at the same time leverage the advantages of a centralized VDI infrastructure.

IGEL Thin Clients enhance data security and compliance with laws and regulations like HIPPA as the data isn’t stored locally, rather in a professionally secured data center. The Thin Clients come with a two way authentication process based on smartcard reader that can be integrated within the devices or externally.

The other security solutions include USB tokens, fingerprint recognition and NFC-badge for reducing authentication time for the users who have to access multiple devices at a site.

The UDC2 software allows businesses to migrate to Thin Client functionality, without replacing any hardware from the existing infrastructure

The users have the option to choose either Linux or Microsoft Windows Embedded Standard 7 as the operating system. Key applications today are unified communication solutions which are supported by most of the devices. Available with top security features is IGEL’s all-in-one thin client UD 10 (Universal Desktop). It is a thin client with LCD display having a smartcard-reader interface with various other optional features like WLAN and infrared touch screen that can be used without keyboard or mouse. “Thin clients have flash memory for saving user settings and other interface options, whereas the overall applications and data are stored at the central server,” says Gloge.

For larger enterprises, the firm provides a customized Application Program Interface (API) called IGEL Management Interface (IMI) that can connect IGEL’s thin client management system UMS with enterprise management solutions like Microsoft SCCM or IBM Tivoli, to help in asset management at the enterprise level. Planning to stay relevant and developing new end-user solutions through their own, as well as Citrix, Microsoft and VMWare technology, the firm is also aiming for industrialization to provide a more personalized and robust solutions for its customer base.
