Real-Time Computing - At the Heart of the New Generation of Data Centers

Eric Baissus, CEO
When Seymour Cray, the astute tech wizard, incubated a series of machines that revolutionized the computing industry, little did he know that his brainchild would break ground in the supercomputing architecture and performance field. Fast-forward to 2016: far from being consigned to a dwindling historical niche, Seymour Cray’s legacy is thriving. His early supercomputers paved the way for pre-sent-day High Performance Computing (HPC), a technology that has proven to be one of the major accelerators for today’s business. Faced with the issue of an exponentially-growing mass of data, businesses are searching for HPC solutions that will allow them to manage and exploit this data, potentially even using it to their competitive advantage.

Our I/O data processor will be at the heart of the new generation of smart infrastructures

“Our society already generates an incredible amount of data every day, more than we can store. This will be decupled with the surge of connected cities, IoT devices, self-driving cars,” says Eric Baissus, CEO, Kalray. “The capability to analyze, process and store these huge flows of data in an efficient and smart way will be a key requirement for tomorrow’s HPC. It will require new types of processing solutions which will complement the existing tradi-tional ones.”

MPPA Microprocessors: High Performance Meets Low-Power and Low Latency

Kalray, a spin-off of the well-known French lab CEA responds to the growing needs of businesses looking to handle large amounts of data. With its innovative Massively Parallel Processor Array (MPPA) manycore micro-processors, Kalray offers high-performance computing solutions that are “low-power” and “low latency”. They have thus proven to be particularly well-adapted to real-time compute-intensive, low-power applications–typically, those that are prominent in the embedded technology and cloud computing sectors.

Beyond Microprocessors: A Complete Set of Real-Time Extreme Computing Solutions

With an offer that extends far beyond its game-changing microprocessors, Kalray hopes to supply solutions that can be adapted to technologies at different stages of their development and can also be tailored to the needs of companies of all sizes.

In addition to the innovative MPPA processor family, Kalray proposes an MPPA-based software environment called AccessCore™, MPPA-based cards for computing acceleration, cryptography and compression offloading as well as Network Interface applications. For businesses looking for fully-integrated solutions, Kalray offers a programmable Network Interface Card (NIC) based on it microprocessor, called the Kalray Open Network Interface Card (KONIC-80). KONIC-80 supports the Open Data Plane (ODP) framework, which is an open-source Linaro-hosted initiative, building momentum in the telecom, networking and security industries. ODP provides a full set of APIs that allow users to easily port and customize software protocol stacks. In parallel, Kalray is working with software partners to offer a complete turnkey solution by porting functions such as Open vSwitch (OVS), MPLS, NVGRE, VXLAN, SSL, IPsec, and TCP along with iSCSI, iSER or NVMEoF.

Innovation in Kalray’s DNA

Kalray continues to put innovation at the heart of its mission, focusing on bringing its unparalleled technology to new HPC areas. The company sees a huge potential in the domain of flash array storage servers. “Data center storage is going through a profound revolution,” Baissus explains, “We enable our customer to build highly efficient and differentiated solutions to respond to these new needs.”

The company is currently developing the 3rd generation of its signature MPPA microprocessor, scheduled to be available by end of next year. Forging ahead, HPC architecture is moving towards a smarter infrastructure and with its low-power, low latency yet high-performance solutions, Kalray is playing an interesting role in this evolution. “From next-generation cloud infrastructures to self-driving cars, real-time extreme computing will revolutionize our lives in the coming years,” Baissus concludes.
