Numerous industries that have long maneuvered in the premises of traditional business environments are now embedding themselves in the fabric of latest technologies such as IoT because of its potential and transcendence. For instance, retail segment is witnessing a complete refurbishment with the integration of the brick & mortar stores and the digital shopping experience. In industrial automation, Industry 4.0 and new business models around asset optimization are spurring the IoT growth. In the medical segment, the promise of wearable sensors and home-health market are sowing the seeds of a new horizon. For the in-vehicle market, autonomous driving and precision farming is leveraging IoT to become reality. With such shifts occurring in the industrial landscape today, corporations across the world need an omniscient, who can aid these industries with the most quintessential tools and sophisticated services needed to thrive in this new dimension. The possessor of such dazzling auxiliaries is German based company Kontron, whose platforms and solutions securely connects devices, meet Size, Weight and Power (SWaP) requirements to enable customers to reduce their R&D costs and create new business models.

Major Differentiators

IoT is still enigmatic for various verticals and even amongst company peers in the embedded industry, it’s important to maintain a high level of customer intimacy. Kontron understands its customers’ markets, the challenges they face and certification requirements for their industries. These understandings, along with the company’s innovation prowess in connectivity, mobility and security, have enabled them to separate themselves from the competition. “Whether it’s technology that brings Wi-Fi and internet access to airline passengers or asset management to reduce costs and provide quicker delivery, Kontron’s spectrum of hardware platforms, helps bring IoT applications out of hype into valuable reality,” explains Rolf Schwirz, CEO and Chairman of the Management Board at Kontron.

The projects Kontron has exerted over the years range from in-flight infotainment to remote asset optimization or intelligent farming. There are well systems designed for greenhouses where sensors measure data such as humidity, moisture, EC and ph to manage the optimized amount and application of fertilizer automatically. Also, Kontron initiated a Proof of Concept with Salesforce.com to directly integrate asset information into the cloud based service solutions.

Over the years Kontron has supplied global original equipment manufacturers’ and system integrators in Avionics, Defense, Energy, Industrial Automation, Medical, Retail, Telecom and Transportation. These verticals are moving towards exploring or adopting IoT business models and solutions.

Roadmap for Kontron

IoT architectures can enable and accelerate many new service opportunities and also accelerate revenue generation, but there are significant challenges that impede scalability across vertical markets, including differing requirements of those involved in the industry. There is complexity and customization requirements, as the technologies involved in creating intelligent systems are extremely broad and complex. Slowly evolving standards in technology or application deployment is another question resonating in the vicinity. Kontron is looking forward to addressing these obstacles through building viable partnerships with robust clients, and to grow its IoT portfolio and services for enabling its customers to realize new business models and faster time to revenue.
