CIOREVIEW >> Supply Chain >> Lantern

Lantern has been recognized by CIOReview Magazine as the exclusive recipient of “Top Demand Forecasting And Inventory Optimization Software 2026,” based on our proprietary methodology, reflecting its position in the industry, and is also named among “Top Supply Chain Management Companies,” reflecting its broader leadership. This profile has been developed by the CIOReview research and editorial team based on insights from an interview with Conor Leen, Cofounder & President; Matt Rojas, Cofounder & CEO; Jay Shitole, Cofounder & CTO.

Never Stock Out. Never Overbuy.

Purchasing at a distributor is one of the hardest jobs in the business. Too much stock ties up working capital. Too little sends customers to the competitor down the road. Lantern, the Purchasing AI for Distributors, guides what, when and how much distributors buy.

The scale is huge. One Lantern customer carries 50,000 products across 22 branches: 1.1 million stocking decisions for a small team of buyers. Demand is less predictable, lead times keep moving, and catalogs keep growing, while spreadsheets and fixed ERP rules have not kept up.

Lantern now guides more than $800 million of inventory across 700 locations for over 30 distributors in HVAC/R, industrial, electrical and plumbing. NAW named Lantern a top innovator in distribution in 2026.

Three Co-founders, 200 Conversations

Lantern was founded by Matt Rojas, Conor Leen and Jay Shitole. It began as a Stanford research project in which Rojas and Leen interviewed 200 distribution executives, who named forecasting as their biggest pain point. Rojas, now CEO, grew up around the industry through his father. Shitole, now CTO, spent five years leading Walmart’s Applied AI Lab, building demand forecasting models at massive scale.

A Custom Model for Every Distributor

Rather than picking from off-the-shelf models, Lantern builds a custom machine learning model for each distributor, trained on its own sales, inventory, purchasing, lead time, customer and product data.

“Every business we work with gets their own unique model, because every business we work with is a bit different,” says Conor Leen, Co-founder and President.

Each week, Lantern forecasts demand for every item and location, drawing on external signals such as weather and carrying forward carrying history from linked or replaced products. It forecasts supplier lead times so stocking levels adapt before delays become shortages and classifies products by margin, hits or revenue, adjusting safety stock as items change groups.

From Forecast to Purchase Order

Lantern turns those forecasts into orders. Buyers open suggested purchase orders, grouped by supplier and branch, with supplier minimums, free-freight targets and buy packs already factored in. Before buying more, Lantern checks whether another branch has stock to spare and recommends a transfer instead across distribution centers, hub-and-spoke networks and independent branches.

Buyers accept 98 of every 100 recommendations. Lantern does the first draft. The buyer still makes the call.

Lantern is a first draft, not an autonomous agent. Buyers see the numbers behind each recommendation and can override it when they know something the data does not. In practice, they accept 98 out of 100, then send orders to the ERP with one click.

Business Impact

Lantern judges itself on commercial results: fill rate, excess inventory, turns and GMROI. On average, customers reduce inventory by 30 percent, lift sales by 5 percent, and save 20 buyer hours a week.

R&E Supply moved from annual to weekly stocking updates and cut inventory 34 percent while maintaining sales, freeing cash to fund a new location. CAPP grew sales 9 percent while holding less inventory, and Lesman cut inventory 25 percent in year one while sales beat budget.

Live in Weeks

Customers go live in six to eight weeks, set up free of charge by the same team that builds the product, with integrations for Prophet 21, Eclipse, Infor, SAP, Microsoft, Acumatica and DDI. Distributors can test Lantern first: it trains on two and a half years of their data, buys for the final six months, and compares the outcome with what their team actually did.

By pairing custom machine learning with buyer judgment and measurable purchasing results, Lantern has earned recognition as a Top Demand Forecasting and Inventory Optimization Software 2026.

Deep Dive

Inventory Forecasting Must Account for Local Demand

Distributors can have plenty of inventory across their network and still struggle to meet demand at individual branches. Stock sitting in one warehouse does little good when customers need it elsewhere, while keeping every location stocked for its highest historical demand can tie up unnecessary capital. With thousands of product and location combinations to manage, purchasing teams cannot review every decision manually. Executives evaluating demand forecasting software need to know whether it can improve local product availability without driving up inventory costs across the business. Network-wide averages can easily hide costly gaps at individual locations. Past sales provide a useful starting point, but irregular buying patterns can make forecasting difficult. Slow-moving products may not generate enough transactions to produce a reliable forecast on their own. Seasonal spikes can also skew averages long after demand has returned to normal. Buyers should look at whether the software can draw insights from related products and distinguish recurring demand from unusual orders. External factors such as weather may also help improve predictions, but their value needs to be demonstrated for the products concerned rather than assumed across the entire catalog. Knowing what customers will buy is only half the equation. Buyers also need to know when to reorder. Changing supplier lead times can make it difficult to act on even an accurate demand forecast, while order frequency and minimum purchase quantities affect how much stock needs to be kept on hand. Software should account for actual purchase order history rather than rely solely on fixed lead times. Safety stock should also reflect how individual products sell at each location. Applying the same buffer everywhere can leave fast-selling products out of stock while slower-moving items pile up. “Lantern refreshes recommendations weekly and lets buyers compare suggested stocking levels with existing settings before approving or overriding them.” The way forecasting software works with existing ERP systems is another important consideration. If recommendations sit in a separate dashboard, buyers may still have to enter them manually into their purchasing systems. They should establish whether the software can read transactions from their existing ERP and feed approved stocking parameters or purchase orders back into it. Buyers also need to understand why the system recommends a particular change. When a business wins a new account or a branch receives an unusually large order, experienced staff should be able to override a forecast without having to work outside the system. Forecast accuracy matters, but it does not tell the whole story. Lower inventory means little if it leads to stockouts and unhappy customers. In some cases, holding more stock may be the right decision if those products sell consistently. Buyers should look at how the software affects product availability, inventory turns and the capital tied up in excess stock. Testing its recommendations against past transactions can also show where they differ from existing purchasing practices before a wider rollout. Buyers should also account for the work involved in preparing historical data and managing exceptions once the system is in place. Lantern builds a custom machine learning forecasting model for each distributor, using historical ERP data and business-specific purchasing practices. It combines demand forecasts with projected supplier lead times to recommend order timing and safety stock at the item-location level. Lantern refreshes recommendations weekly and lets buyers compare suggested stocking levels with existing settings before approving or overriding them. Approved purchase orders or stocking parameters can be written back into the ERP. Its models also examine relationships across products, supporting forecasts where individual sales histories are sparse. Distributors with large catalogs spread across multiple branches, especially those balancing excess inventory against missed sales, are the relevant buyers for this model....Read more
