Advancing Pharma Through Responsible Digital Innovation

Paul Murasko, Head of Digital Innovation & Marketing Operations

Innovation with Commercial Discipline

I have always believed digital innovation is not about the “shiny penny”. In pharma, innovation succeeds not by novelty, but by its ability to scale responsibly and deliver measurable commercial value. The ability to scale share three traits: a clear commercial use case, compliance built in by design, starting with an MLR concept review, and seamless operational integration. Solutions should always address real business needs and the evolving customer landscape.

Data to Commercial Impact

Marketing operations and commercial operations play a central role in turning data into commercial impact. In practice, marketing ops functions as the connective tissue between data, strategy and execution. While data volumes continue to grow, insight only becomes valuable when it informs action. We should move beyond static reporting and dashboards toward decision enablement, which transforms data from a retrospective asset into a forward-looking driver of performance.

Balancing Speed and Compliance

Balancing speed and compliance remains one of pharma’s most persistent challenges, and I suggest we should not consider the opposing objectives. Speed is achieved through processes that are consistent and reusable. An example would be modular content, reference architectures and clear objections based on a brand’s strategy move faster without increasing risk. Early and ongoing collaboration with cross-functional partners reduces rework and delays, while risk-based governance ensures that lower-risk initiatives can progress quickly within pre-defined guardrails. When the MLR process is embedded upstream rather than treated as a final checkpoint, speed to launch becomes faster, more reliable and exciting for the team.

Future-Ready Pharma Marketing Capabilities

As marketing continues to evolve, the capabilities modern pharma teams must build extend beyond traditional functional expertise. Training must exist to ensure skill sets are expanding. Data accuracy and understanding become foundational, and while not everyone needs to be an analyst, all marketers should be able to understand how to interpret insights and translate them into action. Agile ways of working in a test-and-learn environment become crucial. Equally important is omnichannel orchestration to ensure field engagement, digital channels, media and content work together for a personalized customer experience.

Redefining Digital Success Metrics

Measuring success in this environment needs to evolve from traditional marketing KPIs alone. Leading Indicators such as impressions, clicks and click-to-open rates remain useful, but they offer an incomplete picture. They also must be tied to lagging indicators like conversion rates and script lift. Once this foundation is in place, we need to assess behavioral change - how HCPs and patients engage, how content is used and whether interactions become more meaningful. We should also look at operational health metrics, such as MLR efficiency, time to launch and content reuse rates. And finally, learning velocity, how quickly insights are generated and applied.

In closing, I feel digital success isn’t about moving fast or being innovative. It’s about moving consistently, credibly and commercially at scale to adjust to the ever-evolving customer landscape to deliver the content when, where and how they want and expect.
