Through this article, Josefina Escobar discusses Miele Chile's journey in developing a bespoke e-commerce platform to enhance customer engagement and brand presence in the digital marketplace. Facing challenges unique to the Latin American market, the company opted for a tailored strategy, focusing on user experience, scalability and integration of MarTech tools. The success led to replication in Mexico and Brazil, showcasing the importance of customized solutions in digital transformation.

In today’s digital landscape, the integration of marketing and technology has become essential for businesses striving to connect with their audience effectively. At Miele Chile, we embarked on a journey to develop a bespoke e-commerce platform from scratch, an endeavor that not only enhanced our customer engagement but also solidified our brand’s presence in the digital marketplace. Here, I share our strategy, experiences, and insights into this transformative process.

Understanding the Need for a Custom Solution

Miele, renowned for its high-quality domestic appliances, faced unique challenges in the Latin American market regarding online sales back in 2019. The digitalization of the markets in Latam was one of them since consumers were more skeptical about buying products through online channels. They did not trust that they would receive what they bought online, giving their contact information and the payment methods: they simply preferred to pay cash on delivery or make a wire transfer. And big appliances were not among the most frequently purchased categories.

Also, we had the challenge of transferring into the experience that we offer at our stores. Once you enter a Miele Experience Center all your senses are activated. You can see how the appliances will look, smell the cookies in the oven, taste them with ground coffee, listen to the smooth engine of the hoods and feel the softness of the freshly washed clothes.

Our customers expect premium service that reflects the brand’s commitment to excellence and this expectation extends to their online shopping experience. Thus, the need for a tailored strategy became evident.

Taking these two factors into consideration, we recognized that a one-size-fits-all e-commerce solution wouldn't suffice. Our customers expect premium service that reflects the brand’s commitment to excellence, and this expectation extends to their online shopping experience. Thus, the need for a tailored strategy became evident.

Building from the Ground Up

We started with Chile, which by then was the most digitalized country of the cluster. Chileans were buying online, they felt comfortable paying using credit or debit cards to acquire different categories of products. The demographics were also to our advantage: the bigger groups of shoppers were from 26 to 40 years old followed by 41 to 55 years old and were evenly divided in men and women.

We hired a developer, we assigned an internal team to participate in the project and the pandemic began. Suddenly the need was completely different. Activate the e-com as fast as possible and make the platform functional and aligned with Miele’s values.

The focus was user experience: the idea was to create an intuitive interface that was visually appealing and easy to navigate. We incorporated features such as online appointment scheduling and streamlined checkout processes.

We also opted for a design that allowed us scalability and an architecture that could handle high traffic volumes and support future growth. Security was another major consideration to protect our customer's data.

Developing the platform from scratch allowed us to integrate various MarTech tools seamlessly. We have been able to optimize the customer journey continuously. Marketing automation tools were used to better target communications and drive engagement.

Ensuring a consistent brand experience across all touchpoints was vital. Our platform is integrated with various channels, including social media, email and service systems providing a unified experience for our customers.

Since it is a tailor-made solution, the development didn’t end at launch. Which is also a challenge in terms of budget. But we consider that having an agile approach allows us to be responsive to the market needs and we can evolve according to customer expectations.

The results were impressive at launch. Of course, it was powered by the context of the pandemic, but in Chile, the growth of online sales was almost 500% and nowadays the channel is gaining share within the sales of the company. Automation of some operational tasks associated with sales reduced manual workloads and increased efficiency because the teams could focus on strategic initiatives.

Conclusion

The development of the Miele Chile e-commerce platform from scratch was a challenging yet rewarding experience. So successful that we decided to replicate it in Mexico and Brazil. This journey is not easy, but it highlights the importance of customized solutions in achieving digital transformation and sets a benchmark for future endeavors.

By sharing our approach and insights, I hope to inspire other businesses to embark on their journey towards creating solutions that drive growth and customer satisfaction.
