Defining a Leadership Approach to Digital Learning

One of the most important lessons I have learned is that innovation is creative problem solving. The starting point is always the problem we are trying to address, not the technology itself. Too often, initiatives fail because they chase tools rather than focusing on how innovation can advance the institution’s mission and commitment to student success.

Another key lesson is that innovation requires collaboration. In the spirit of Kotter’s change management framework, bringing together faculty, IT professionals, administrators, and students creates the coalition needed for lasting change. At UCF, our collaborative leadership model ensures that stakeholders are involved from the start, which has consistently produced sustainable outcomes.

I have also learned that innovation requires calculated risk-taking. We must create secure environments that encourage experimentation, whether through pilot programs or alternate uses of existing technologies. Data-informed decision making is equally important, helping us see what works, what does not, and how to adapt quickly.

UCF’s growth into one of the nation’s largest public institutions has shown us that innovation must be scalable, sustainable, and systematic. Systems must be adaptable and agile to serve an evolving student population, while also remaining accessible and supportive of all learners.

As we explore new technologies like artificial intelligence, these priorities remain essential. Our guiding principles emphasize ethical use, solutions that improve rather than harm, legal compliance, secure experiences, and active collaboration. These principles shape both our use of AI and our broader approach to digital learning and innovation.

Creating Inclusive Pathways for Diverse Learners

As a Hispanic-Serving Institution with a majority minority student body, we recognize that responding to the evolving needs of our learners is both a responsibility and an opportunity.

We have made a deep commitment to digital accessibility, ensuring that platforms, course materials, and resources are usable by all students. Beyond compliance, we embed accessibility standards into every stage of development. We also invest in Universal Design for Learning, which builds flexibility and multiple pathways into experiences. Alongside this, our open education and affordable learning initiatives reduce cost as a barrier and expand access to high-quality resources.

Faculty plays a critical role in responsive learning design, and we provide robust professional development and services to support them. This includes multimodal content creation, immersive simulations, adaptive pathways, and ongoing training that enhances pedagogy and provides credentialing opportunities.

We are also expanding the use of learning analytics to identify engagement opportunities and provide timely interventions. For fully online students, these insights are paired with dedicated Success Coaches who guide learners with individualized support. Together, these efforts make our ecosystem scalable, learner-centered, and responsive to the diverse needs of every student.

Addressing Barriers to Growth in Digital Education

One pressing challenge is faculty capacity. Our faculty balance heavy teaching loads and research while also addressing compliance initiatives. To support them, we provide flexible pathways to engage with training and services, while also exploring solutions that reduce administrative burden so they can focus on teaching and research.

Another challenge is sustaining quality as we grow. To address this, we adapted quality frameworks to guide on-demand course reviews. Faculty who meet benchmarks earn Quality or High-Quality designations displayed in course shells. These designations recognize faculty efforts while signaling quality assurance to students.

Technology management is also significant. With more than 1,500 LTI integrations in our LMS, we must constantly support updates, address security concerns, and provide training. To improve, we are strengthening our technology onboarding model, fostering stronger communication between academic and IT partners, and conducting proactive vendor outreach. We even developed AI-powered tools to review accessibility, privacy, and security documentation, allowing us to assess new technologies more efficiently.

Finally, data integration remains a challenge. As we expand learning analytics, our priority is to unify data from multiple platforms into a single analysis environment. This holistic approach provides a clearer view of both faculty and student needs, enabling informed decisions that drive scalable innovation.

Balancing Innovation and Institutional Mission

Artificial intelligence is one of the most impactful technologies shaping higher education. At UCF, we apply AI beyond teaching and learning, using it to improve processes and efficiency. For example, we have deployed AI tools to review procurement documentation, integrated AI into course design to convert semester formats, and introduced AI-driven bots within our LMS to provide individualized study support.

We are also expanding immersive learning. Our extended reality initiatives focus on experiential and simulation-based learning, and we are exploring how dynamic AI elements can enhance VR environments to create more adaptive and personalized experiences.

Learning analytics remains a strategic priority as well. We are examining how AI can increase the speed and actionability of insights, allowing us to identify opportunities to support student success more effectively.

When evaluating new technologies, we apply guiding principles that ensure alignment with our mission, scalability, security, and ethical use. This collaborative approach ensures that emerging technologies are sustainable solutions that serve students and faculty.

Creating Digital Learning Ecosystems that Last

My advice is to always anchor innovation in student and faculty success. Technology should be a means to create more effective learning experiences, not the end goal.

Next, invest in faculty development and partnerships. Faculty are the change agents in digital learning, and equipping them with tools and training ensures that innovation takes root in sustainable ways.

Leaders should also think about scale and sustainability from the start. Promising initiatives often fail to expand because they were not designed to grow across the institution. Building with adaptability in mind ensures long-term impact.

It is also essential to commit early to accessibility, privacy, and security. These principles build trust and responsibility in digital ecosystems. Defining success criteria and data needs from the beginning enables data-informed decision making that helps institutions adapt and improve continuously.

Finally, I encourage leaders to share openly, both the lessons they learn and the solutions they develop. Collaboration across higher education advances digital learning collectively and helps foster ecosystems that are innovative, inclusive, and sustainable.
