A Leadership Approach Shaped by Talent and Business Alignment

I oversee everything in the people space, including payroll and benefits, talent acquisition, learning and development, and core HR areas such as operations and employee relations. My focus is on ensuring these functions operate cohesively to support our broader business goals.

A key part of my role is partnering closely with executive leadership to ensure our talent and HR strategies stay aligned with evolving business priorities and translate into clear, actionable directions for our teams.

That connection between talent and business strategy shapes how we approach development, hiring and leadership.

Rethinking Talent Development

Our talent strategy is shaped by the pace and complexity of the cybersecurity industry. To stay ahead, we align closely with shifting business and client priorities while continuously assessing our most critical roles. We prioritize developing internal talent and providing clear career growth opportunities, ensuring employees are in the right roles at the right time, and positioned to support the business as it evolves.

The broader talent market has also shifted. During COVID, candidates were less willing to move, creating intense competition for talent. More recently, there has been a greater focus on being intentional in hiring, prioritizing the right fit over speed.

Despite these changes—and within an industry often characterized by high turnover and burnout—we have achieved approximately 20 percent year-over-year personnel growth while maintaining turnover at around 13 percent. Ongoing evaluation of roles, responsibilities and individual strengths supports that growth and helps maintain the right fit across the organization. We proactively identify mismatches, reassess responsibilities, and realign them with organizational needs. This continuous approach enables us to place people where they can have the greatest impact while continuing to grow with the business.

Driving Growth While Protecting Culture

Much of our success stems from operating in a fully remote environment. Early on, a key challenge was inconsistency in managerial approaches—not from a lack of capability, but from the absence of clear, shared frameworks. To address this, we established well-defined leadership expectations, standardized processes, and employed consistent employee management practices.

These strategies have delivered tangible results. Having embraced remote work before it became widespread, we have always prioritized communication and intentional culturebuilding. This deliberate focus has helped us consistently earn recognition as a Best Place to Work by Inc. and USA Today, maintain high engagement scores, and successfully retain and grow our talent.

Standing Out in the Talent Race

In the highly competitive cybersecurity market, we are very intentional about how we differentiate when attracting talent. Competitive compensation is essential, but it is only one part of the equation. We emphasize clarity of role, the impact each position has, and growth opportunities, reinforcing this throughout the interview process.

Our talent acquisition team brings deep industry experience, helping us communicate our value clearly and attract the right people. We move quickly, stay transparent and make decisions with confidence, as speed and clarity are critical in this market.

We also place strong emphasis on expanding our talent pipeline beyond traditional recruiting channels, with a significant portion of our hires coming through referrals— reflecting the strength of our network and culture. We maintain a deep commitment to the veteran community, recognizing the leadership, discipline, and technical expertise veterans bring to cybersecurity roles. Today, more than 10 percent of our workforce is comprised of veterans, including over 20 percent of our technical teams.

Programs like GuidePoint Security University (GPSU) further strengthen our approach by expanding access to talent and supporting long-term development. GPSU is a structured training and development program designed to help individuals build and apply critical cybersecurity skills through hands-on experience, mentorship, and real-world exposure. It enables us to develop high-potential talent intentionally—both from within and outside the industry—while creating clear pathways for growth within the organization and the industry as a whole.

Together, these approaches not only support our business growth but also strengthen the broader cybersecurity ecosystem, as talent moves across partners, vendors, and clients. By applying these strategies, we can effectively identify and meet emerging talent needs.

Ensuring HR Alignment with Cybersecurity Priorities

In a rapidly changing business environment, staying relevant requires simplicity and clarity. We focus on minimizing complexity and prioritizing solutions that enable speed and agility. HR is evolving beyond a traditional support function, increasingly leveraging tools such as AI-driven candidate validation and technologies that enhance recruitment and performance management.

We have also built internal frameworks that improve visibility across processes, enabling faster decision-making and helping identify misalignments early. Aligning HR with cybersecurity priorities ultimately depends on how effectively we leverage technology and respond to change with agility.

Prepared for High-Stakes Challenges

Anticipating talent needs is an ongoing, dynamic process. I stay closely aligned with executive and corporate leadership and partner cross-functionally with teams like sales, professional services, and marketing to ensure we remain in sync as business priorities change. This coordination enables greater agility in response to evolving macroeconomic and external factors impacting our clients.

Focusing on clarity and continuously developing both leaders and employees creates a strong foundation for growth and makes it easier for the business to succeed.

It’s equally important that our internal HR initiatives— whether leadership structures, talent development programs, or new technologies—are designed to adapt to changing market conditions. Strong documentation, consistent processes, and continuous communication ensure visibility across the organization and enable teams to respond effectively. This emphasis on alignment and speed informs how we shape HR strategy in a high-demand cybersecurity environment.

The Evolving Role of HR in Cybersecurity

As HR continues to evolve, it is becoming a core function that shapes talent strategy and protects culture. It moves beyond traditional process management, building strong partnerships across the organization. These partnerships position HR as an integral advisor and enable contributions that focus on solutions rather than tasks.

At the same time, the traditional perception of HR is shifting. The role is no longer task-focused, but centered on enabling leaders—equipping them with the tools, clarity, and capabilities to operate effectively. This is where HR is heading, becoming deeply embedded in the organization as an integral partner rather than functioning as an order taker.

Building Leaders for Sustainable Growth

Scaling HR ultimately comes down to creating clarity, building capability in leaders and making it easier for the business to operate in a way that is simple, smart and scalable. When leaders are confident, their decisions are more aligned with the business, reducing the need for reactive escalation. Focusing on clarity and continuously developing both leaders and employees creates a strong foundation for growth and empowers the business to succeed.
