A big challenge in technology is the management of specialized systems and how they integrate with other specialized systems. I think Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) is a great example of how standards are in place, but based on the versions of the standards and the company’s specialized configurations, we are forced to "make it work" rather than truly integrate.

Transportation Management Systems (TMS) provide an enormous advantage especially if it is properly pair with reporting systems that provide actionable information from multiple data sources. We are embarking on a project currently that will do just that. We are changing to a TMS that we believe is the best in the LTL market, but we are also investing in a 3rd party reporting tools that will link several data sources together to produce what I call the “Decision Document” which will incorporate the analytics from our internal service experts in sales, operations, and costing. This reporting tool will not only produce dashboards, but will also assess what the actions should be taken when performance is at various levels.
