From Aircraft Maintenance to Leading Cargo Operations

My journey in aviation began in 1995 as a junior aircraft maintenance technician. After serving for 9 years in MRO, I then had the opportunity to join the information technology as a business analyst, where I was able to comprehend the full picture of airline operations in particular and the aviation industry in general. My career in air cargo operations started with a deep interest in logistics and infrastructure development back in 2005, when I was given the opportunity to manage cargo systems projects. Over the years, I’ve held various roles within the Ethiopian Airlines Group, including business analyst, project manager, operations manager, IT manager, Digital manager and sales and services manager. Each role offered me a broader view of how airlines and airports function as critical nodes in global trade. Taking on the role of Director at Bole International Airport was a natural progression, especially as cargo operations became increasingly vital during global disruptions like the pandemic. The opportunity to modernize and expand our passenger and cargo facilities to meet growing demand inspired me to lead with purpose and innovation.

Smart Logistics Solutions

One of the most impactful investments has been the expansion of our state-of-the-art cargo terminal, which now ranks as the largest in Africa and handles over 1 million tons of cargo annually. We’ve also implemented automated cargo handling systems, real-time tracking technologies and integrated digital platforms that connect freight forwarders, customs and ground operations throughout our network using various protocols. The Integration of barcode-based inventory management systems and the establishment of a dedicated cold chain facility for pharmaceuticals and perishables have significantly reduced cargo dwell time, improved shipment accuracy and strengthened Bole International Airport’s position as a leader in air freight logistics across the continent. Looking ahead, our priorities include green logistics, AI-driven forecasting tools and digital integration with customs and freight partners to streamline the end-to-end cargo journey.

Driving Innovation and Maintaining Sustainability

Innovation often challenges the status quo, and understandably, there can be resistance. We address this by involving stakeholders early in the process, creating ownership, offering training, and demonstrating clear value. For example, when we introduced automated warehouse systems, we paired the rollout with hands-on workshops, coordinated project site visits and pilot phases. This approach helped build trust and ensured a smoother transition. At the same time, we balance our day-to-day operations with long-term goals like sustainability, energy efficiency, and resilience. Our decision-making is guided by a strategic framework that aligns with both Ethiopian Airlines’ Vision 2035 and ICAO’s environmental goals. We prioritize projects that offer both immediate operational benefits and long-term value.

Embracing Emerging Trends and Nurturing Future Leaders

We’re closely watching trends in automation, IoT, and predictive analytics. Smart sensors, for instance, are revolutionizing how we monitor perishable goods. Blockchain is another promising area, offering secure and transparent documentation for international shipments. These technologies will redefine how airports manage cargo, making operations faster, safer and more customer-centric. For young professionals in the field, my advice is simple: be curious, be adaptable and never stop learning. The aviation industry is evolving rapidly and leaders must be both technically skilled and strategically minded.
