As Head of IT at CMOC Brasil, I’m responsible for our IT infrastructure across seven locations in Brazil, including four plants, one mine and a corporate office. To support these diverse sites, I’ve developed a hybrid strategy that integrates both on-premises and cloud-based data center solutions. Our setup includes over a hundred servers, divided between our chemical plants and our main data center. Critical systems, like SAP and Salesforce, are hosted on the Cloud, allowing us to leverage the cloud for scalability and integration.

Addressing Telecom Constraints with Hybrid Solutions

One of our main challenges is managing telecom constraints in remote areas. Deploying a hybrid approach with these limitations can be difficult, but we’re working with global vendors to bridge these gaps. Building these partnerships is essential to properly deliver the services our sites need and maintain connectivity.

Importance of Flexibility in Choosing Cloud Providers

When it comes to cloud services, flexibility is key. Our cloud vendors have provided the flexibility we need, but we continually assess the cost-benefit relationship. While scalability is remarkable, it needs to align with our budget. We’re constantly exploring ways to maintain that flexibility without compromising our financial targets, as the cost-benefit has become less favorable compared to the past.

Cybersecurity: A Top Priority

Currently, cybersecurity is our most critical focus. With the rise in cyber threats, I’m working to transition as many systems as possible from our on-premises data centers to the cloud, where it’s easier to implement a strong cybersecurity strategy. This move is essential for safeguarding our infrastructure in a challenging security environment.

Looking Ahead: A Need for Adaptability in Data Center Pricing

The hybrid approach is quickly gaining popularity. But if data center providers don’t adapt their commercial strategies, companies may start moving back to on-premises solutions due to high costs. Flexibility is essential, but it has to come with a reasonable price tag to stay sustainable.

With current global instabilities, we have to be even more cautious about our deployment strategy. Events around the world remind us that, even with secure solutions, external factors can affect our ability to deploy and operate efficiently. This is why building resilience through adaptable and cost-effective infrastructure is more important than ever.
