Sinto Neelankavil, the group director of cyber security at FIVE Hotels and Resorts, recently sat down with us to discuss the challenges and trends impacting the travel and hospitality space.

Neelankavil jumped straight to the point when we asked him what his take on technology within the hospitality industry looks like and said, "Technology plays a crucial role in facilitating and enhancing business in the hospitality industry."

He also outlined several pressing problems and developments affecting the sector today.

"Let's be honest: digital transformation is at the forefront of the rapidly evolving travel and hospitality industry. The focus is on enhancing customer experiences, optimizing operations, and driving efficiency," says Neelankavil.

Companies like FIVE are undergoing significant digital transformation journeys to meet the demands of their tech-savvy guests. This can involve anything from adopting cutting-edge technologies, revamping outdated infrastructure, seamlessly integrating various platforms and applications, and ensuring uninterrupted connectivity across all touchpoints.

Besides these digital transformations, cloud computing has revolutionized FIVE's operations, providing scalable infrastructure and adaptable software solutions.

"It has improved data management and facilitated seamless teamwork, in my opinion. The benefits of cloud computing, such as remote work opportunities and cost savings, have outweighed challenges related to data security, regulatory compliance, and system compatibility," added Neelankavil.

Given the vast amount of data involved, efficient data management and analytics are crucial in the travel industry. FIVE deals with customer bookings, preferences, and reviews, and effective data management and analytics are necessary to gain insights, optimize processes, and make data-driven business decisions.

However, challenges related to data quality, integration, and drawing useful conclusions from massive data sets need to be overcome.

Neelankavil says FIVE is acutely aware of the cybersecurity threats brought about by digitization. Protecting guest data and preventing data breaches are paramount concerns. The company prioritizes strong security measures, employee education, and proactive risk management to ensure compliance and safe online transactions. Mitigating these obstacles is crucial for safeguarding guest information and maintaining their trust.

When we look at the greater picture, providing a seamless mobile experience is essential in the travel industry. Neelankavil illustrated FIVE's focus on intuitive app design, feature-rich capabilities, and optimized websites for mobile devices. Overcoming obstacles in mobile strategy includes integrating external services and ensuring a consistent user experience across devices and operating systems.

"The company prioritizes strong security measures, employee education, and proactive risk management to ensure compliance and safe online transactions"

This also means the hotel group is leveraging technologies like chatbots, automation, and machine learning for enhanced customer service, which is no longer taboo. FIVE acknowledges that implementing AI solutions comes with challenges, such as data quality, model training, customer acceptance, and ethical considerations. "By addressing these hurdles, FIVE can harness the power of AI to improve guest experiences and drive better decision-making," says Neelankavil.

FIVE utilizes a range of technologies, such as property management software, CRM tools, and booking platforms. Integrating these systems presents challenges due to their complexity. Ensuring uninterrupted data flow and real-time information sharing requires overcoming obstacles and is crucial in enhancing operational efficiency and delivering a seamless experience for their 'Tribe' and guests.

"Of course, we also have to consider regulatory and compliance requirements - which is paramount for FIVE. Adhering to regulations like GDPR, PCI DSS, ISO 27001, and accessibility guidelines while driving innovation and safeguarding customer data poses challenges for IT departments. Striking the right balance is crucial to ensure compliance, protect sensitive information, and drive innovation," stressed Neelankavil.

When asked about major concerns that keep him up at night in the travel and hospitality space, Neelankavil mentioned cybersecurity risks, data privacy compliance, integrating legacy systems, scaling during peak periods, technology adoption, user experience, rapid technological changes, employee training, and ensuring a positive return on IT investments.

However, he expressed confidence in his team's capabilities, allowing him to have 'general peace of mind' when it comes to all things related to the trust he has in his fellow FIVERs.

We then had a chat about a very exciting latest project. FIVE Hotels and Resorts is currently focusing on the pre-opening of FIVE LUXE, ready to launch in Q4 2023. This project aims to provide an exceptional experience, true to their disruptive style.

Neelankavil mused, "FIVE is considering implementing a digital voice assistant powered by AI to efficiently address guest queries and enhance customer satisfaction. They also evaluate an AI-based customer experience platform to consistently deliver exceptional experiences across all touchpoints and foster brand loyalty. These technologies will enhance communication channels and provide real-time analytics."

Looking into the future, Neelankavil expressed excitement about several technological trends in the travel and hospitality space. Edge computing, IoT, robotic process automation (RPA), data analytics and business intelligence, enhanced data security and privacy measures, voice assistants and natural language processing (NLP), and mobile apps and digital experiences are among the trends that excite him.

"By embracing these technologies, we will enable FIVE to redefine guest experiences, provide personalized services, improve operational efficiency, and stay ahead in a competitive market," concluded Neelankavil as we neared the end of our chat.

In conclusion, Sinto Neelankavil believes the travel and hospitality industry is on the cusp of a technological revolution. By embracing various technologies, FIVE Hotels and Resorts can redefine guest experiences, provide personalized services, and improve operational efficiency. These innovations will enable FIVE to stay ahead in an increasingly competitive market.

By harnessing the power of technology, we're confident that FIVE can create unforgettable moments for their guests and drive their boundary-breaking business to new heights.

The future of travel and hospitality is here, and we're just as excited FIVE Hotels and Resorts to be part of this transformative journey.
