The world of information technology (IT) and operational technology (OT) used to be two different spheres, but with the increasing digital transformation and initiatives of various industries, these two domains are becoming increasingly interwoven. While many IT professionals are enticed by the expanding realm of OT and the novel prospects it presents, it's crucial to acknowledge that mastering OT demands a distinct set of skills and profound domain expertise that greatly differs from traditional IT. The realms of IT and OT should ideally be managed by separate, specialized departments due to the inherent complexities and divergent knowledge bases involved. This article delves into the unique competencies necessary for excelling in OT and elucidates the fine line that distinguishes the digital and industrial worlds.

Understanding the IT-OT Landscape

Before diving into the skills necessary for the IT-to-OT transition, it's essential to understand what these domains encompass. IT refers to the use of systems for data processing, storage, and exchange, typically focusing on the company's business side. It's commonly associated with software, hardware, data management, and networking.

On the other hand, OT represents the hardware and software used to change, monitor, or control physical devices, processes, and events in the enterprise. It is traditionally associated with energy, manufacturing, healthcare, transportation, and other industrial sectors, where the focus is on the operational process and the machinery used to produce products or services.

The convergence of IT and OT, often referred to as IT/OT integration, brings together the best of both worlds, optimizing operational efficiency, data acquisition, analysis, and cybersecurity.

Digital vs. IT

The digital world and IT often get used interchangeably, but there are subtle differences. IT focuses on technology's management and use, such as managing networks, hardware, software, and databases. Conversely, digital is a broader term that refers to the transformative use of technology that opens new avenues of business, creates novel products or services, or changes how a company interacts with its customers. Thus, the digital world is about leveraging IT and other technologies to innovate and transform.

Key Skills for OT Leaders

• Understanding of Industrial Processes

An essential part of transitioning from IT to OT is understanding industrial processes. This includes knowledge of production cycles, system operations, machinery functionality, process safety, and more. IT professionals need to appreciate the precise, time-sensitive nature of many OT environments, where a delay of a few seconds can have significant consequences.

 As digital transformation accelerates, primarily fueled by advancements in IoT, AI, and big data, the separate realms of IT and OT are being brought into sharper focus 

• Deep Knowledge of Asset Lifecycle Systems

Understanding tools and principles like computer-aided design (CAD), building information modeling (BIM), 3D modeling, and construction management software and processes. A comprehension of project management is vital, given the challenges of coordination, budget and timeline management, and safety considerations that span these industries. Gaps often relate to the need for improved project management, technology integration, and skilled workforce development. The overarching goals across these fields include enhancing efficiency, safety, and the quality of work, incorporating sustainability, and optimizing resource management.

• Familiarity with OT Systems

Knowing SCADA, DCS, PLCs, and RTUs, which are commonly used in industrial settings, is crucial. This includes understanding how these systems interact with physical processes, how they are designed, and how to maintain and troubleshoot them.

• Familiarity with Industry-Specific Technologies and Digital Use Cases

Different industries use unique technologies and have their own OT landscape. It's crucial to familiarize yourself with industry-specific technologies and the applications and use cases of these technologies in each industry, whether it's PLCs in manufacturing, SCADA systems in utilities, or CNC machines in metalworking.

• OT Cyber Security

As IT and OT integrate, the need for robust cyber security measures becomes critical. OT professionals need to understand the unique security challenges that OT environments present and devise strategies that can secure both IT and OT assets. It is a critical skill, especially when remote monitoring/operations of assets is in place.

• Data Structure, Management, and Analysis

The integration of IT and OT leads to an increase in data generation. It's essential to manage, analyze, and extract actionable information and insights from this data. Hence, skills in data management, data analysis, and possibly machine learning and AI are invaluable.

• Interoperability and Integration Skills

With IT/OT integration, it's essential to understand how to interconnect disparate systems, allowing them to communicate and work together. This requires proficiency in areas like system integration, OT networking, data interoperability, and standards and protocols used in both IT and OT

The Digital Divergence

As digital transformation accelerates, primarily fueled by advancements in IoT, AI, and big data, the separate realms of IT and OT are being brought into sharper focus. This is not a convergence but rather a redefinition of roles where IT systems aid and support OT systems, each under its own digital transformation initiatives.

In light of this evolving landscape, it's clear that mastering the separate disciplines of IT and OT requires distinct sets of skills and deep domain expertise. These domains ideally warrant individual departments with specialized teams for effective management. As such, having a workforce that possesses robust skills in both IT and OT fields within the corresponding departments will be paramount in driving the next wave of digital transformation. Recognizing and respecting the unique competencies of both IT and OT is a critical step towards a future where they coexist in symbiotic harmony yet maintain their individual identities.
