Water in Brazil is still a rare commodity. 40 million Brazilians do not have it in their taps, as well as 100 million do not even have sewage collected. There are more schools with internet than with water and sewage. Furthermore, the level of losses is dramatic: 50 percent on average in the Southeast states and 75 percent in the Northeast of the country.

What is the sanitation regulatory framework?

The “Marco Legal do Saneamento” is an attempt to offer dignity to millions of Brazilians who do not have sewage collection or treated water. It is also an opportunity for companies in the sector to create partnerships with state agencies and even participate as a private initiative.

It ensures compliance with the universalization criteria established by legislation (Law No. 11,445/2007, with the new wording introduced by Law No. 14,026/2020). The rules set targets for serving 99 percent of the population with drinking water and 90 percent with sewage collection and treatment by 2033.

What does that have to do with technology?

With 70 percent of Brazilian states submitting some type of bidding, it is estimated that around BRL 893 billion will be invested in the segment to bring water and sewage to the Brazilian population in the next 12 years.

Technology plays a key role in leveraging results through a complete digital transformation in the segment via implementing individual smart water meters, front and back-office systems in physical stores or call centers and customer relationship applications. It is also crucial in setting up intelligent digital channels such as URA, Bots, and Whatsapp as well as control and analysis systems for water and sewage treatment plants.

This transformation goes through a complete definition of enterprise architecture - open, scalable, reusable, and ready to connect anything with anything through a robust API BUS.

The use of the cloud is also essential in the journey. And with each new acquisition, speeding up the process of integrating new operations is essential to ensure the expected results and revenues.

Last but not the least, the journey will require a very strong approach to data and analytics to understand the customer at every touch point with the business; leverage new revenue through losses, fraud, and defaults; and transform customer experience through physical and digital channels.

The Brazilian population is eager to taste this transformation of such an important segment of the country, and technology plays an essential role in the journey!
