David Hunt is a seasoned professional with two decades of experience in leadership and management in the distribution, wholesale supply, and healthcare industries. In an exclusive interview with CIOReview, Hunt shares his valuable insights on the significant factors for cloud technology’s rapid popularity, innovations in the space, and his experience with the cloud.

As the director of cloud-powered technology at Ferguson Enterprises, what, according to you, are the significant factors that play a crucial role in this market propulsion?

We strategically focused on expanding our cloud-based services for managing and analyzing data during the pandemic. Recognizing the opportunity to leverage cloud computing enhanced our capabilities to serve our customers better.

Before, we were consolidating dispersed data from various sources across our enterprise and vendors into a data platform to support enhanced understanding and planning for our business. As a result, we have access to data that would have taken months to source in the past. By providing self[1]service capabilities to our business teams and moving the data closer to end users, we empowered them with tools for efficient data utilization.

However, the pandemic interrupted this journey, forcing us to shift 26,000 employees to remote work swiftly. Fortunately, the cloud seamlessly supported this overnight migration and ensured uninterrupted operations, enabling us to adapt to the new remote work culture rapidly.

The ability of cloud solutions to scale more quickly and efficiently than traditional on-premises solutions is a compelling reason for many businesses to migrate to the cloud.

The ability to easily add or reduce computing resources based on their requirements has allowed companies to respond to changes in demand and business needs. Furthermore, the cloud has opened up new possibilities for innovation by providing access to cutting-edge technologies without heavy capital investment in hardware or in-house expertise for solution development.

What is your opinion on the long-term impact of technology advances and digital transformation in cloud adoption?

With the significant growth of AI platforms such as chatGPT, GitHub, Copilot, and Codeium, we are witnessing a growing adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities in the cloud. Furthermore, we will observe a continuous transformation in factories and industrial solutions, where machine learning will play a prominent role alongside traditional rules-based AI. Such a shift towards machine learning is driven by the need to constantly innovate and enhance the efficiency of product designing, engineering, and building processes.

Cloud computing will continue to be a game-changer for businesses, leading to disruptive changes in traditional business models and decision-making processes. It will empower small and large companies to store and process large volumes of data. The long[1]term goal is to enable businesses to become more agile, respond promptly to changing market trends, and gain a competitive advantage. Keeping the desired outcomes in mind is crucial, rather than just racing towards adopting cloud technologies.

Omni-cloud computing enhances connection services to businesses allowing data to be integrated and reorganized across numerous platforms. What are some of the innovations in the cloud that can help businesses become more robust and flexible in terms of data processing and management?

The top five innovations in the cloud that can help businesses become more robust and flexible include leveraging AI and machine learning capabilities as a part of the cloud migration journey.

  ​With the significant growth of AI platforms such as chatGPT, GitHub Copilot, and Codeium, we will witness a growing adoption of artificial intelligence and machine learning capabilities in the cloud  

Prioritizing edge computing to support Internet of Things (IoT) deployments and meeting low latency requirements for their businesses. Encapsulating and containerizing applications enable high mobility of applications across different cloud environments.

Using serverless solutions to reduce the impact on internal teams, allowing them to remain highly focused on continuous improvements and automation.

Adopting a Cloud Right view of the world by embracing hybridization of their environments and strategically migrating workloads to the cloud as needed to optimize their IT landscape.

Before your stint at Ferguson Enterprises, what were some of your experiences that empowered you to gain deep expertise in cloud engineering, infrastructure and operations, planning and policymaking, IT service support, cloud operating expenditure budgets, and other aspects of the ever-evolving cloud landscape?

My years in the military have instilled a deep desire to serve and a recognition that failure can be a valuable opportunity for rapid learning. It also taught me the significance of collaboration with experts and continuous growth.

These principles have guided me in development and analytics, where I have learned to always focus on the desired outcome, and I have realized that the journey toward the result is just as important. If the desired outcome is achieved, it is crucial to identify any inefficiencies along the way and iterate as necessary. In cases where the result falls short, I embrace a blameless post-mortem approach, identifying changes required to avoid systemic failure, repeating, and striving to get it right.

This constant improvement and learning mindset has been instrumental in my journey in development and analytics roles.

My cloud journey began at Ferguson five years ago when I delved into Stephen Orban's book Ahead in the Cloud. Since then, I have dedicated countless nights to studying and practicing builds, pulling data from APIs, and more.

However, I have been fortunate to work with innovative architects, continuously learning engineers, pioneering developers, forward[1]thinking database and data teams, and empowered leaders who challenge the status quo.

Finally, what is your advice for budding industry leaders and CXOs in the cloud segment?

A cloud-right approach is imperative in a cloud-first journey, avoiding lift and shift, prioritizing thorough analysis of migration reasons and total cost of ownership (TCO), and continuously evaluating and enhancing security measures. Determine whether speed or cost is the driving factor in your cloud strategy, as the two have a constant dynamic tension. Invest in your teams by ensuring they have the necessary skills, expertise, training, certifications, and external partners for success.

Establish a group focusing on policy automation, architecture review, constant expenditure review, cost advisement, and identifying underutilized resources for effective cost avoidance. Continuously enhance your understanding of your cloud journey's potential benefits and risks and make informed decisions based on your organization's specific needs, goals, and desired outcomes. Plan for continuous evaluation and improvement of your cloud patterns as you drive innovation, reduce costs, and strive to improve your business performance.
