Powering the Possibilities

Quality of life has improved exceedingly during the last decade, as people today have the opportunity to leverage multiple innovative technologies and services to build better cities and infrastructures. With the rapid growth in industrialization and population in the urban areas, citizens play a pivotal role to turn the alluring vision of a civilization harbored by smart cities into reality. Keeping that in mind, governments today aim to maneuver efficient tools and adopt smart technologies to deliver quality citizen services by focusing on areas such as parking, traffic congestion, emergency response, mobility, crime monitoring, and network access. That said, each city has its own set of concerns, challenges, and budgets. While there are innovative technology solutions in the market that can help, the lack of procurement expertise and complex government workflow poses stiff challenges. Enter Miller Electric Company.

Leveraging its 90-year legacy in serving different industries including government, Miller Electric focuses on helping cities and its administrators build, monitor, maintain, and optimize the entire life-cycle of their energy and information infrastructure. “We follow the theme of ‘think global and act local’ to find a long-term solution for the challenges faced by the city governments,” says David L Stallings, Digital Strategy Officer, Miller Electric.

Delivering a Higher Standard of Living

Founded in 1928 by Henry G. Miller, Miller Electric—with its dedicated team of professionals and the industry’s leading engineers, manufacturers, and distributors as its partners— provides innovative solutions and quality service to develop a higher standard of living. Whether governments are planning a new build, modernizing an existing facility, maintaining infrastructure, or looking to improve a city’s energy efficiency, Miller Electric gives them the support and power to succeed. With a deep understanding of the best technology solutions available in the market today, Miller Electric strives to find the right solution to solve the various challenges a city faces. “We work closely with the government agencies to reduce the total cost of ownership of technologies. Our support enables them to focus on elevating the standard of living for people,” says Stallings. Unlike other industries, a city’s government has a unique approach to technology adoption. “You can expect many multiple groups and departments to be involved in a technology decision and the funding can be even more complex, involving public and private firms,” explains Stallings. In such a scenario, Miller Electric takes a consultative approach to find and implement the right solutions for government agencies. The aim is to enable the government with a technology that can be repurposed for different use cases for maximum ROI and better citizen services.

This approach helps Miller Electric break the barriers between various government departments and encourages them to work together toward a common goal. Take the case of a city transportation agency that was following a manually-driven approach to finding damages around the city.

We follow the theme of ‘think global and act local’ to find a long-term solution for the challenges faced by the city governments

They did so by driving through every corner of the city looking for broken guard rails, signage, and potholes. Miller Electric aided the agency with an intelligent analytics solution that leveraged the existing cameras—used in parking enforcement and police cars— to analyze the roadways and provide real-time information on road safety issues back to the transportation group.

Going Beyond Delivering Technology

For Miller Electric, the key to finding the right technology solution is to know what problems the government is trying to solve. “Once you know that, finding the right solution is easy, given that the market offers abundant and able solutions,” says Stallings. This mindset, coupled with its consultative strategy, allows Miller Electric to break silos and bring multiple government departments together to find a suitable solution. “In an instance, a client was looking for cost-effective lighting fixtures across the city. But, there was a conflict between the decision-makers. One of its agency’s concern was better citizen experience while the other’s aim was crime control. We brought to bear our skills and expertise to find a middle ground in choosing a single solution that could serve the purpose for both departments,” adds Stallings.

In another instance, a city had hurdles with their parking infrastructure. Apart from the challenge of finding a good parking spot, the billing kiosk proved to be a bottleneck with people waiting in a long and unmoving queue to pay their dues. The citizens (drivers and attendants alike), irked and discontented to be wasting so much time, looked to their government for an efficient solution. With Miller Electric as its partner, the city replaced the existing kiosk system with license plate reading cameras and a mobile app for the citizens. The vehicle owners can now pay the parking fee and find the number of parking spots available in a specific location through the app.

A Trusted Partner for the Long-Term

In its 90 years of business, Miller Electric has built a relationship based on trust and collaboration with its clients. Stallings humbly states that the company’s vision is to partner with a city and partake in its long-term success. Their core value stands for building a sustainable community where they can cultivate long-lasting and collaborative relationships with their clients.

“Miller Electric will continue to leverage advanced technologies in the future to deliver excellence and quality services on time and at a fair price. We aim to empower organizations with access to data that will help them create new solutions,” concludes Stallings.
