Building Design Customized with Updated Impact Estimator Software from Athena

OTTAWA, CN: Athena Institute, a non-profit consultancy and think tank in Life cycle assessment (LCA) for environmental building, has launched a new update to its acclaimed Impact Estimator for Buildings Software. The building tool is used by North American design teams to explore the environmental footprint of different material choices and core-and-shell system options.

The Impact Estimator is a stand-alone program that allows users to model their own custom assembly and envelope configurations; provide flexibility for proposed designs and existing buildings.

The current release version 5.1 features new and updated Life Cycle Inventory (LCI) databases and processes for building materials where users can define their own concrete mixes with additional 48 mix designs under National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA). The benchmark concrete design from NRMCA was added to database product library for six compressive strengths.

The software tool provides a cradle-to-grave LCI profile for whole building, including the projected flows from nature consisting of energy, raw material flows, and emission to air, water and land. The institute has also created a “how to define custom product” tutorial to show users the manual to add their own unique composite products or mix designs.
