Cisco Assists Shaw Communications in Providing Customers with Access to Thousands of Video on a Single App
FREMONT, CA: Shaw Communications, a network and content experience company, is using Cisco’s new Open Media Distribution solution to simplify the content delivery network (CDN) operations for its new FreeRange TV service.
Open Media Distribution, a new CDN solution, is designed for delivering multiscreen video experiences to managed and unmanaged devices across telco, cable, and mobile access networks. It allows service providers to extend their managed video content to their subscribers’ IP-enabled devices such as PCs, tablets, game consoles, and Wi-Fi-connected mobile phones by using service routing and content distribution intelligence.
Using open APIs and plug-ins from the open source community, the Open Media Distribution frees service providers from the restrictive proprietary architecture of traditional CDN implementations. The solution supports video on demand, live video, time-shifted TV, progressive download, secure download, and small object caching from a common high-performance HTTP cache.
The Open Media Distribution software applications are installed on high-performance Cisco Unified Computing System (Cisco UCS) servers, Cisco Content Delivery Engines (CDEs) and Intel x86-based commercial off-the-shelf servers that provides a flexible and cost-effective solution.
The CDN solution is powered by Cisco’s Virtualized Video Processing (V2P) platform, a media application and hosting platform for orchestrating end-to-end workflows, from video acquisition to delivery. Built on cloud-based network function virtualization (NFV) architecture, V2P enhances business agility and reduces the complexity of video workflow operations. The combination of the Open Media Distribution and V2P solutions enables service providers to rapidly deploy and simplify CDN configuration in order to reduce capital expenditures and operating expenses for demanding video delivery workflows.
The FreeRange TV is a mobile TV service using which Shaw's 2.6MnTV subscribers can access to their TV and content subscriptions on any Android or iOS device using an app. The service enables users to watch live sports, on-demand shows, movies and much more on the go from multiple devices on the FreeRange TV app. With the use of Cisco’s CDN solution, Shaw is able to offer its customers instant access to over 80 live channels and thousands of on-demand titles, all in one app.
“Shaw was looking for a scalable CDN solution that could help them quickly manage the huge growth in video traffic on their networks, reduce costs, and generate new revenue from the wholesale CDN opportunity. Cisco’s Open Media Distribution offers rapid deployment and simplified CDN configuration needed for complex video delivery,” says Conrad Clemson, senior vice president and general manager, Service Provider Video Software and Solutions, Cisco.
