Data Modeling - The Key Element of Effective Business Strategy
The discipline of data modeling comprises the designing of an organization’s data, reducing redundancies, adhering to standards, and building data-definitions that facilitate growth of business. Above all, data modeling brings enormous value to an organization. Rightly, it has wide-ranging applications in the organizations of all types.
Enterprise Data Models (EDMs) are built to design the entirety of data for an organization, and involves business and technical personnel extensively discussing about the data-related needs of the organization. Some organizations, instead of creating their own data models, purchase them from providers. Furthermore, data modeling, which is defined as a process that defines and analyzes the data requirements that foster the business, is an important asset for every organization.
What data governance includes is the execution and enforcement of authority over data management. Data modeling, on the other hand, can be thought of as an execution and enforcement of authority over the definition of data, involving the right persons at an appropriate time to define the precise data for an organization. This is very much in synchronization with the essence of data governance. Data modeling is a part of data governance, for it is a discipline that is required in order to make sure that data is designed in the prescribed manner.
Organizations that do not pay much attention to modeling of their data, often struggle with the complexity and inconsistency of data. By not being able to correctly interpret the data, they lose the opportunity to increase their value from data extraction. To sum it up, no organization governs their data without modeling it, signifying that data modeling and data governance are closely associated to each other.
