Freescale Announces Latest Switching Platform for the SDN Era
FREMONT, CA: Freescale Semiconductor announces new switching platform that supports SDN as well as the traditional networking paradigm. The open-source based switching platform for network services is developed in collaboration with Advantech, a premium original device manufacturer.
As efforts are on to realize a fully functional and programmable open source enterprise-grade networking platform, Freescale chips in with its innovative white box solution that supports OpenFlow, OpenStack, and OpenDaylight. The switch is based on Freescale’s 24-core, server-class QorIQ T4240 processor and VortiQa Open Network software.
The latest network services switching platform comes with Linux operating system, open data path API, virtual machine monitor (VMM) acceleration that paves for building a flexible and agile network. The QorIQ processor works with standard switch ASIC devices to deliver small factor devices with power-packed performance. The processor ensures greater security with its ONIE secure boot mechanisms, firewalling, IPsec over VXLAN and packet inspection/analytics capabilities.
Other features of Freescale’s latest switching platform include: support for Virtual Network Function (VNF); commercial grade VortiQa SDN software with support for OpenFlow version 1.3.
“In recent years, the world’s networks have undergone a dramatic transformation. Enterprises, network carriers and their equipment suppliers need a new generation of switching technology for this new era,” said Sam Fuller, head of Strategy and Solutions for Freescale’s Digital Networking group. “Freescale’s intelligent switching platform helps OEMs and their customers unleash the full value of SDN, while saving power and cost by eliminating the need for additional appliances commonly required in traditional switching implementations.”
