Horizon Desktops in the Cloud

CIO Review

So, you want to run your desktops in the cloud? That’s great! We can help you navigate your public cloud options so your business can maximize the benefits that the cloud can bring to your organization. But hold on just a minute. Before we dive in headfirst, let’s take a step back and understand some of the nuances of running VMware Horizon in a public cloud. “Nuances?” you might ask. Absolutely! To start, make sure you have documented your business drivers and your technical and non-technical requirements for this move to the public cloud. Always make sure you have representation from both the technical and business side of your organization when declaring all your requirements, as this is key to a successful move to the cloud. While this article is not intended to cover design decisions for a Horizon public cloud deployment, we will discuss a couple for the purpose of integrating a few different services.

Now that you have your requirements defined, we can begin to help you understand the different public cloud options available for Horizon desktops. You might say, “I thought these public clouds were relatively the same?” Well, I know you hear this a lot, but the truth is: it depends! That’s why we start with business drivers and requirements, and then consider the nuances of the different public clouds. Although there are some similarities between them, they do not offer all the same options when it comes to Horizon desktops. Here are some considerations. Do you require or desire a Desktop as a Service (DaaS) offering or will you manage the Horizon infrastructure yourself? Are you using NSX features on-prem with your desktops today? Do you have a specific security requirement for the desktops provided by a 3rd party vendor? What software are you running within your desktop OS? Once these are answered, we can begin to help align your requirements to the different public cloud providers.

Today, I will be focusing on AWS, specifically, VMware Cloud on AWS (VMC on AWS). Although I won’t go into a lot of details on this offering, VMware Cloud on AWS is an integrated cloud offering jointly developed by AWS and VMware where you can run your vSphere workloads on AWS infrastructure that is managed by VMware. See here for more details.

Horizon Components

Let’s quickly review the components. The individual Horizon components will be the same as what you have running on-prem today. The exception could be if you are not currently using the Horizon Cloud Connector. For those of you that are new to Horizon, the following make up the Horizon infrastructure components:

• Horizon Cloud Connector

• Horizon Unified Access Gateways

• Horizon Connection Servers

• Load Balancer

• App Volumes

• VMs

For today’s discussion, we will be using the Cloud Connector, Connection Servers, and a Load Balancer.

Horizon Deployment Choices

For those of you who already run and support VMware Horizon today on-prem, deploying Horizon on VMC on AWS is similar. Let’s dive into the Horizon part a little more. There are two Horizon deployment options available to use with VMC on AWS as of today: the All-in SDDC Architecture and the Federated Architecture. The All-in SDDC option is what we will focus on and is similar to what you might already have deployed on-prem. For specific details on feature parity between Horizon on VMC on AWS and Horizon on-prem, see here.

The All-in SDDC architecture consists of deploying all the Horizon components inside the VMC on AWS Software Defined Data Center (SDDC). Your deployment choice will depend on your requirements. Below is a figure that shows the Logical Architecture diagram of the All-in SDDC deployment.

Availability and Scale

Think about how much scale will you need and what type of availability do you require for your Horizon desktops. If you are running Horizon today on-prem, you most likely have heard of the Pod and Block concepts for Horizon. If you’re not familiar, a Pod is made up of a group of interconnected Connection Servers that broker connections to desktops or published application. A block, on the other hand, is what provides the capacity to the Pod. Each block contains one or more vSphere clusters, including its own vCenter. How do you determine how many Pods and Blocks will you need? Let’s go back to those requirements you defined in the beginning. If you have a requirement to scale beyond the size of a single Pod, you can build out multiple Pods. Today, we are deploying a single Pod with one resource block. With VMC on AWS, the resource block will be a single SDDC per the recommendations from VMware to avoid any protocol traffic hair pinning between SDDCs.

Now let’s consider the availability question. If you have a requirement to provide redundancy beyond what a single Pod can provide, we can deploy another Horizon Pod into a different VMC on AWS availability zone or region. By leveraging multiple regions, we now are protected against any regional outages in AWS. Although not a common problem, Availability Zone (AZ) and regional outages can occur. For reference, VMware offers a 99.9% SLA for a VMC on AWS deployment in a single Availability Zone.

You might be asking, “If we deploy across different AZs or regions, how would we broker connections across multiple Horizon Pods?” Remember that scaling your Horizon resources could be within a single region for additional capacity beyond what 1 POD can provide or across regions for DR requirements. There are two options today: Horizon Universal Broker (UB) and Cloud Pod Architecture (CPA). We will be focused on the Universal Broker; however, Cloud Pod Architecture has been around for a while, and you might even be using this for your on-prem Horizon deployments. Further details around CPA can be found here.

Here’s a quick intro to Universal Broker. It’s a cloud-based brokering technology and is part of the Horizon Control Plane services found in the fully managed VMware Horizon Cloud service. Universal Broker provides the ability to broker multi-cloud assignments that span multiple Horizon pod deployments regardless of the underlying infrastructure. Universal Broker can also broker sessions based on where the user’s and pods are located. Additional information on Universal Broker can be found here.

Please note that the End of Life (EOL) date for the Horizon Cloud Service First-Gen Control Plane is currently targeted for Jan 31, 2024. Details about that announcement are located here. The Next-Gen Horizon Control plane is available; however, Universal Broker has not been added to it yet. So, for now you will need to continue to use the First-Gen Control plane and submit an exception request using the link located in the KB I posted. Below is a figure that shows Horizon internal users using Universal Broker with multi-site pods on VMC on AWS.

Load Balancing

We now need to discuss and decide what services will need to be load balanced. Will the users be accessing Horizon desktops only from the Internet using UAGs or only from your internal network with or without internal UAGs or some combination of these options? The answers to these questions should have been defined in your requirements.

For this article, I will be focused on internal-only access without internal UAGs. When using Horizon Universal Broker (UB) with the internal traffic-only use case without internal UAGs, a load balancer will not sit in front of the Connection Servers. UB talks directly with the Connection servers. For the rest of this article, I will be building out a design using UB with the internal-only use case.

Back to the load balancing topic. Does this mean you won’t need a load balancer at all for this deployment type? I’ll let you decide but let me explain a few things first. Placing a load balancer in front of the Horizon connection servers can still provide benefits, specifically when trying to mitigate the risks in this type of design. Currently, the Cloud Broker Client Service within the Horizon Cloud Connector (HCC), which supports UB, is only available on the Primary node, thus deploying an HCC cluster does not mitigate against this single point of failure.

So, what happens if you experience a problem with the HCC or the Horizon control plane? Depending on your design and how many PODs you have available, one option is to redirect your users to a different FQDN until the issue is resolved. That FQDN could be a load balancer in front of your connection servers.

Since we are using VMware Cloud on AWS, we have a few options for load balancers. We can leverage a native AWS load balancer, VMware’s Advanced load balancer (formerly AVI), or a 3rd party Load Balancer. For this article, I have selected the AWS Application Load Balancer (ALB). I have deployed the AWS ALB in a customer AWS account. To connect and route the load balancer traffic to and from our SDDC, I have deployed a VMware SDDC group and configured a peering attachment to my AWS Transit Gateway. We will continue to build off this design in the following section based on other requirements for my use case. Additional details around SDDC groups can be found here.

The AWS ALB will only load balance the primary XML-API protocol over HTTPS traffic. The secondary protocol connection or Phase 2 traffic will be directly between the Client and the Desktop, assuming there is no tunneling through the Connection Servers. If you have PCoIP requirements, a different design and configuration will be required. The following figure shows a high-level architecture with an integrated AWS ALB in a customer VPC. You could also deploy the ALB in the “Connected VPC”.

Networking and Security

Let’s go back to your requirements again. What are your connectivity requirements between your data center, end users, and the cloud? Where does your Internet egress and ingress point need to be? VMware Cloud on AWS includes NSX-T which handles all the networking functionality within the SDDC. NSX-T also has built in firewalling capabilities that are included with the current cost of this offering. Recently announced at Explorer 2023 Las Vegas, the NSX-T advanced firewall features will now be included for free. Some organizations can satisfy their requirements using the NSX-T firewall for their workloads, and if that applies to your organization, that’s great.

However, if you have specific requirements or existing skills with another firewall manufacturer, you can also leverage 3rd party firewalls deployed in AWS or a very limited use case deployed within VMC on AWS. For our discussion today, we are going to use a 3rd party firewall that we have deployed in AWS. While I won’t discuss a specific firewall vendor or the deployment of one now, Converge can help you navigate all your options and help you deploy the firewall(s) against best practices. Building off our deployment in this article, the following figure shows a 3rd party FW integrated with VMware Cloud on AWS.

Conclusion

As you can see from some of the technologies we briefly discussed today, we can now provide a comprehensive solution for your Horizon desktops to operate in the public cloud. While we only touched on a few specific design decisions today, different requirements can change your design and deployment choices. Always define your technical requirements up front along with any business requirements to ensure a smooth transition to public cloud. As we discussed, you can scale your Horizon deployment within the same AZ, across AZs or across regions based on your requirements and continue to integrate your additional VMware Cloud on AWS SDDCs and Horizon PODs building off this design.

Converge is here to help you navigate your public cloud options and to ensure your public cloud journey is a successful one.

The following figure shows the technologies we integrated at a high level with VMware Cloud on AWS throughout this article.

Advanced coating solutions have become an important part of modern manufacturing and industrial operations. While coatings have traditionally been associated with appearance, their role today goes far beyond aesthetics. It helps protect surfaces from corrosion, wear, chemicals, moisture, and extreme temperatures. Industries including automotive, aerospace, electronics, healthcare, construction, and energy depend on these solutions to improve durability and support reliable performance. As expectations continue to rise, manufacturers are investing in coatings that offer stronger protection, longer service life, and better environmental performance. Why Are Advanced Coating Solutions Becoming More Important Across Industries? Equipment and components are expected to perform reliably for longer periods, often in challenging operating environments. This growing demand for durability is one reason advanced coatings are being used more widely. In automotive and aerospace applications, for example, coatings help protect critical parts from corrosion, surface wear, and constant exposure to demanding conditions. Better protection often translates into longer equipment life and fewer maintenance interventions. Cost efficiency is another important consideration, as companies look for practical ways to improve performance without increasing operating expenses. High-performance coatings can help reduce friction, improve energy efficiency, and slow the rate of surface degradation. In construction and infrastructure projects, protective coatings help buildings, bridges, and industrial structures withstand years of exposure to weather, moisture, and other environmental stresses, reducing repair requirements and supporting lower maintenance costs over time. Environmental concerns are becoming more important for many businesses, which want coating solutions that perform well while helping reduce their environmental impact. Because of this, water-based coatings, low-VOC products, and cleaner application methods are becoming more popular. These options help lower emissions without affecting quality, durability, or performance. What Technologies Are Driving Innovation in Advanced Coating Solutions? Nanotechnology is helping improve coating performance in practical ways. By adding nanoparticles to coating formulations, manufacturers can increase scratch resistance, corrosion protection, and overall durability without significantly increasing coating thickness, making these coatings well-suited for applications where long-term protection is important. Similarly, smart coatings are bringing new capabilities, with some that can react to changes in temperature, humidity, or mechanical stress. In contrast, others can indicate early signs of wear or damage, giving operators better visibility into equipment condition, making maintenance planning easier and helping improve asset reliability over time. Application technology is improving alongside coating materials. Robotic systems and automated spray equipment help achieve more consistent coverage while reducing material waste. The result is improved quality control and greater efficiency throughout the production process. Digital monitoring tools are becoming increasingly common in manufacturing environments. ...Read more
The role of conversational AI is becoming more relevant as the interface between firms and their customers and employees, as well as their processes. With virtual assistants, chatbots, and voice agents managing conversations, companies require a proper way to measure if the system gives relevant responses. An AI conversational quality platform meets this need by placing testing, monitoring, evaluation, and performance analysis within a structured framework. Instead of analyzing individual conversations in isolation, companies can set benchmarks for quality on a massive scale. This allows teams to work on areas that need improvement and to ensure that their technology works in an organized way. Improving Quality across AI Conversations There are various aspects that determine the quality of conversational AI technologies, such as the accuracy of response, context sensitivity, relevance, tone, consistency, and task completion. Such a platform would assess these aspects based on pre-established parameters and provide insight into how the systems perform in different scenarios. This is especially important in cases where AI is utilized for customer service, sales, internal support, financial services, healthcare management, or other functions where conversation quality determines the performance. Evaluation through automation can minimize the drawbacks of relying solely on manual review procedures. Corporations will be able to analyze interactions in higher volumes without resorting to inconsistent frameworks of evaluation. Conversations can be evaluated based on rules, models, scores, or a combination of the above strategies. This will allow companies to identify problems with responses, incomplete answers, wrong recommendations, or even breaches of corporate policy. Human analysis is still important in difficult cases, but evaluation will become more effective when conducted automatically. Good platforms will also be capable of testing the AI through scenarios even before deploying it into production. Developers can create different kinds of scenarios ranging from common requests to uncommon ones, questions with ambiguity, and policy-sensitive cases. By testing these scenarios repetitively, companies can find out their gaps in performance before affecting actual users. It is also a good method to compare models and configurations. Using Analytics for Continuous Improvement With the use of conversational AI, performance tracking remains necessary due to possible changes in performance as a result of shifts in user behavior, changes in knowledge sources, changes in company policies, and model changes. The good thing with a good platform is that it is able to integrate the interaction data and offer performance metrics to show how the system is performing. Analytical tools will help correlate technical performance with the goals of the company. In one case, the company will realize that its chatbot creates correct data but finds it hard to perform certain service procedures. In another case, the company will find out that while its system is able to respond correctly to standard queries, it causes escalations in other cases. Root-cause analysis is another critical skill. In case of a drop in quality score, there is a need for the team to understand if the problem arises from the language model, prompts, information search, system integration, conversational flow, or any other data-related reason. A platform that structures evaluations by topics, intents, workflows, or failures will help to reduce the time from problem identification to its resolution. This will promote an iterative operational model where evaluations become an integral part of operations. Strengthening Governance and Business Value As conversational AI becomes more widespread across organizations, the importance of governance grows. Good platforms can assist in setting criteria to be used in assessments and providing documentation on how these tools are being evaluated. Companies can set out standards on accuracy, privacy, policy compliance, consistent responses, and correct escalations. Documentation can facilitate review processes and prove that the AI tools are being managed using the set criteria. Security and privacy issues also should be taken into account when considering quality programs. Controls need to be in place to deal with the handling of conversation data, restrictions on access, and protection of sensitive information. The quality program should be set up in such a way that quality monitoring will improve the performance of the system while avoiding unnecessary disclosure of user information. Financially speaking, quality management for conversation AI systems could be of great importance when it comes to protecting investments in automation. The bad performance of automation systems can lead to higher escalation rates, more repeat contacts, higher costs of service and dissatisfied customers. A more precise evaluation would be able to find problems at the early stages and allocate resources for those areas, which would provide some tangible advantages. The conversational AI quality platform market is thus evolving on the basis of the need for AI performance to be measurable and manageable. Companies that approach quality in this way can establish a basis for scaling their conversational applications. The integration of evaluation, testing scenarios, analytics, governance, and improvement in these platforms makes a tangible basis for matching the conversational AI to business expectations. Quality management will continue to be essential to achieving consistency, user support, and responsible evolution of the AI system as adoption broadens within the organization. ...Read more
Modern organizations operate in an environment where every department depends on accurate information and connected processes to maintain efficiency. As businesses grow, finance operations, inventory, customer service and project management become increasingly interconnected. Disconnected systems often create delays, increase manual work and reduce visibility across the organization. Digital transformation has therefore become an essential business strategy rather than simply a technology upgrade. It creates a stronger operational foundation that supports consistent performance and sustainable growth. Many organizations adopt enterprise resource planning platforms to improve coordination and decision-making. The value of these platforms depends on proper implementation, customization and long-term support. Working with a Microsoft solutions partner for Dynamics 365 Business Central enables organizations to align technology with operational priorities while creating a connected environment that supports every department. Instead of adjusting business processes to fit isolated systems, organizations can establish workflows that improve efficiency while remaining flexible enough to support future growth. Building Connected Business Operations The first key to operational excellence is good communication between departments. Sales forecast and production information are important for inventory managers, and purchase data is important for the finance team. Customer service staff also require instant access to order and delivery details. If information is not centralised employees waste precious time in their efforts to look for information rather than doing their work. The centralized enterprise platform will provide a unified environment for key enterprise functions. Staff use common data that is consistent across departments. This will minimize duplicate records, create accountability and provide managers with accurate business information to inform decision-making. Integrating the software is not enough to be successful. Each organization has different authorization procedures, reporting requirements, operating systems and compliance needs. A well-designed implementation will take the platform to meet the existing business goals rather than forcing the staff to work in unfamiliar ways. This will help to ensure a more seamless transition and maintain continuity of operations. In addition to enhancing operational performance, automation diminishes repetitive manual tasks. Structured workflows can speed up the approvals for invoice processing, inventory updates and financial reconciliation with minimal manual effort. Staff have more time to concentrate on planning customer relationships and ongoing enhancement. Centralized reporting also provides greater visibility throughout the organization. Integrated dashboards provide managers with an overview of financial performance, inventory activity, purchasing operations and business trends. Quick access to meaningful information enables informed decision-making and helps the organization to react better in the changing business environment. Supporting Sustainable Growth Business growth introduces new operational demands beyond increasing sales. Organizations may expand into additional locations, introduce new services or manage larger supplier relationships. These developments require stronger coordination across finance operations, procurement and customer management. Scalable business systems provide the flexibility needed to support these changes without disrupting existing processes. Workflows can evolve alongside organizational priorities while maintaining consistency across departments. This adaptability enables businesses to remain efficient as operational complexity increases. A Microsoft solutions partner for Dynamics 365 Business Central provides valuable guidance by understanding how technology should support both present operations and future goals. Rather than concentrating only on software deployment, experienced professionals evaluate existing processes, identify opportunities for improvement and recommend practical solutions that strengthen long-term operational performance. Correct data migration is also an important part of implementation. All information from financial records should transfer properly to the new environment, including customer information and operational information. Planning helps to minimize disruption and/or preserve information that is useful to continuing business activities. One of the key factors to successful adoption is employee training. Any technology that is advanced will only yield meaningful results when its users know how to use its capabilities in their everyday work. Continually assisted practical education fosters confidence that boosts productivity and maximizes technology investments for companies. Continual improvement is also achieved by periodic system optimization. The needs of businesses change continuously as they add new services, improve their processes, and adjust to customer needs. Periodic reviews enable workflows, reporting and automation strategies to evolve while maintaining daily workflow. Creating Long-Term Business Value Operational excellence is not limited to improving efficiency. It also strengthens resilience, adaptability and collaboration throughout the organization. Businesses with connected operations often achieve greater financial visibility, improved teamwork and stronger responsiveness to changing business conditions. Leaders gain clearer insights while employees perform their responsibilities with greater accuracy and consistency. Technology investments are long-term investments that can be measured over a period of time, and they can be effective when they support business strategy rather than short-term goals. Regularly assessing performance to identify opportunities for improvement and to make operational processes more efficient creates a larger basis for growth for the organization in the future. Strategic collaborations offer continuous support, assisting firms to integrate new capabilities, optimize processes, and adapt seamlessly to evolving business demands. The key to success is careful planning, combined with experienced implementation, employee engagement, and continuous improvement, which build more efficient operations, customer experiences, and a sustainable business for lasting success. ...Read more
