How AI Plays a Significant Role in National Security
The recent advancements in AI have had a significant impact on national security.
Fremont, CA: Artificial intelligence (AI) is developing as the defining technology of the twenty-first century, with the potential for a computer to maximize its chances of attaining its goals by responding to data acquired from its surroundings. AI has existed in various forms for decades. However, over the last decade, the exponential growth of digital data, increased computer power, and breakthroughs in machine learning algorithms have resulted in the widespread adoption of AI in both the public and private sectors. For several more advanced biological capabilities, like vision, hearing, language translation, driving, game playing, and complicated decision-making, AI systems are increasingly capable of delivering results that exceed human performance. Machine learning is used by the majority of modern AI systems, which learn and adapt by applying statistical models to make inferences from data patterns. Deep learning, a sort of machine learning that uses artificial neural networks inspired by the scattered communication nodes of the human brain, has been responsible for much of AI's growth over the last decade. Deep learning has enabled mankind to automate far more tasks than prior technologies, leading to significant productivity benefits in both the public and private sectors.
Recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence have far-reaching consequences for national security. Because of its ability to drive military and information superiority, AI has the potential to be a transformative national security technology on par with nuclear weapons, aircraft, computers, and biotech. AI is already being utilized in the military to automate weapons systems and provide predictive maintenance by calculating the likelihood of failure on helicopter engines. Since recent machine learning innovations have focused on automating the interpretation of photos, audio, foreign language, and other data, intelligence services in particular stand to benefit from AI improvements.
AI's immense economic potential, in addition to its immediate national security applications, underscores the technology's importance to long-term national strength. Deep learning improvements have sparked a massive amount of private-sector investment in and adoption of AI technologies. According to a McKinsey global survey, 56 percent of respondents indicated their organizations are utilizing AI, with more than a quarter claiming that AI is responsible for at least 5 percent of earnings.
