Jewel in the Crown, American Pearl's 3D Printing Platform
FREMONT, CA: Do you dream of customizing your own jewelry? Does the cost of your unique masterpiece give you nightmares and will your customized masterpiece be delivered to you in 3 or 4 days? All your nightmares are put to rest, while making your dream a reality as the American Pearl is bringing the jewelry industry and the 3D printing technology together, reports Clare O’Connor, Forbes.
Eddie Bakhash, CEO, American Pearl, plans to change the $275 bn industry by using a combination of computer-aided design (CAD) software and a Solidscape T-76 3-D printer. He says, “Now, with the advent of our platform, we’re no longer taking off-the-shelf parts and welding. There’s no jeweler at a bench with a blowtorch. The cost and labor savings is phenomenal. And we’re empowering consumers to make jewelry in real-time.”
The customer can create or customize their jewelry on the company’s website, while selecting the precious metal (gold, silver, or platinum) and stones of their choice. They can also decide on the cut, weight, color and clarity.
Once the customization is complete, American Pearl’s CAD/CAM software platform outputs a digital file that is perfectly proportional. This is then used to produce a 3D printed model, of the jewelry, made of thermoplastic.
The metal of the customer’s choice is then poured into the digitally-designed mold and when it hardens, the stones are set by a master jeweler as per the online customization. Having most of the labor cut out, the company has the completed piece delivered to the customer in 3 or 4 days.
Bakhash aims to find and exploit every nice in the jewelry industry using the 3D printing technology and the CAD software.
