Key Benefits of Augmented Reality

By CIOReview | Wednesday, December 28, 2022

The use of AI in restaurants reduces the cost and stress of hiring and managing humans. AI is also used to provide customers with a consistent experience in the form of robots in restaurants. Also, AI is used to eliminate human errors and in automating processes.

FREMONT, CA: Augmented reality(AR) is often mistaken for Virtual reality (VR) because it conjures up images of futuristic-looking goggles walking around. As opposed to VR, AR is accessible using just the phone's camera. Individuals can interact with virtual items through the cell phone screen. Manufacturers use AR in various ways in industry, such as adding work instructions to surfaces, so workers can visualize preferred assembly procedures dynamically.

In general, AR is a growing market. By 2026, the AR market is expected to reach $175 billion, according to market research firm ABI Research. The biggest gains will come from the consumer-facing segment, but AR devices and applications are also needed in industrial and enterprise settings.

Restaurants and AR: The restaurant industry will benefit from AR menus. By looking through their phone's camera, guests can see food items come to life right before their eyes. When the diner moves their phone, the AR technology alters the perspective of what they see in real-time. People eat with their eyes first, so AR is a great fit for the food industry.

AR can be extremely functional, as it allows guests to see the scale of food items and better understand things like size and quantity. In addition, it can break down barriers, allowing guests to try new items without fear of being surprised.

Some chains are dipping their toes into AR. Non-menu items were added to Pizza Hut's AR campaigns. In a special edition pizza box, the chain turned Pac-Man and other games into a virtual arcade. As AR technology is used in more and more aspects of our everyday lives, these types of implementations are expected to continue and complement AR menus.

Benefits of the AR menu: A McKinsey report titled "McKinsey Technology Trends Outlook 2022: Immersive-reality technologies" outlines the organization's thoughts on the AR adoption timeline. During the next three to ten years, “consumer AR will become a low-fi experience while enterprise AR improves, with augmented visuals interacting more fluidly with external inputs and usability expanding beyond preprogrammed spaces and uses." After ten years, AR will become a part of everyday life, with sensors providing people with augmented experiences in restaurants and in a wide range of other settings.

In addition to AR, restaurants will also use this technology to deal with the labor shortage. Together with self-service ordering options, AR will allow guests to better engage with restaurants in a way that is streamlined, allowing restaurants to operate more effectively and efficiently.

Some chains will add AR menus and find positive feedback from diners. AR menus will generate publicity and buzz for restaurants, which are needed to attract Gen Z diners who don't dine out as frequently as older generations. AR menus will become a standard offering at restaurants around the world due to these reasons.
