Long Term Impacts of AI and Machine Learning on Genomics
FREMONT, CA: Genomics is the future that holds the key to unlocking cure to a lot of diseases. It is the ability to compile and access the large volumes of data which is obtained from an individual's genome and alter the thought angle to any and all diseases. It has also opened new paths to the healthcaresystem.
The recent discovery of a new gene in zebrafish could lead to a new angle of understanding how exposure to chemicals leads to disease in humans, said in a study conducted by Oregon State University. Zebrafish has been acknowledged to be an excellent model for biomedical research in recent years because they rapidly reproduce, and their embryonic genetics and biological systems have many similarities with humans. The research was financed by the National Health Institutes and recently published in the Environmental Health Perspectives journal. The study describes the interaction between potentially toxic chemical compounds, a receptor of proteins, and the newly discovered gene called slincR. A range of chemicals, including polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), dioxins and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), cause adverse human and wildlife health effects, and many of these compounds interact with specific receptors to cause toxicity. "These chemicals are exposed to human beings and fish. To cause any impact on vertebrates, a chemical must first interact with this receptor. Besides showing that PAHs act as activators for the expression of the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) and the slincR gene, the study confirms a relationship between slincR, a non - coding RNA, and sox9b, an essential gene in human development. Understanding the negative effects of chemical exposure leads to a better understanding of disease-related toxicity and better intervention measures to protect susceptible people

It is a frightening task to understand the human genome, let alone produce breakthroughs in the field of genomic medicine by merely relying on human capabilities. AI, machine learning, and big data are the perfect means by which the repetitive tasks and analyzing vast volumes of data is undertaken. Advancements in AI and machine learning have given better insights into genomics and recognized patterns in data that makes sense.
